Blind crafting resources? (self.Blind)
submitted by Laser_Lens_4
So I want to try and get into making stuff. I've always enjoyed doing things with my hands. I'm thinking of starting with something like clay modeling, and I'm wondering what kinds of resources are out there to help make it easier without sight? I'm also curious as to what else is there to do. I've had ideas floating around in my head. Stuff like resin castings or making small candies, but I'm not sure of the viability of those. Any resources or tips would be appreciated.

I’ve explored a few accessible craft ideas on my YouTube channel if you want some ideas. :) I’m a seamstress, knitter, painter, and have explored a few other topics like podcasting.

Check out the American Council of the Blind Crafters FaceBook group. They hold different crafting classes over Zoom almost every week. Just join the ACB email list to get the Zoom links.

There’s a culture of blind knitters because it’s such a textile/feel craft. Walmart has a tub of molding clay by Crayola that is good for beginners. As long as you keep the lid close it’ll stay stable indefinitely.

Would that be a good first step before trying to work with The kind of stuff you can bake in an oven?

Air dry type clays tend to be a bit softer/easier to mold than the kinds like Sculpey that bake in the oven. Those can be super hard to manipulate sometimes, especially depending on how they were packed/stored.

When the pandemic eases, consider looking for a local pottery studio with access to a wheel. Full disclosure, I'm sighted, but honestly many times I close my eyes or look away when I'm throwing on the wheel because it's so much better to feel the balance of the clay rather than try to use my eyes. It's a hugely tactile experience and I think it would be worth a shot!

Gotcha. I'll give that a go. May as well start out with something easy.
