Hello. R/blind subreddit. I would like an opinion(self.Blind)
submitted by Mistowgan
As you have no doubt been informed over the last few days. The video streaming platform Twitch has removed the term "Blind Playthrough" from the platform in belief that it is offensive to yourselves. I myself am visually impaired and I feel so mad at this as I feel misrepresented. I do not find the term offensive.
I would ask if I was to make a petition to get the term reinstated to the site and now that I am aware of it. Add in some points about making the site easier to use for people with serious visual impairment.
Would you sign it?
Edit the petition has been made and here is the link.

It does seem annoying that the community is being spoken for, and most members of the community have no issue with the term.

I agree. Did they hear actual complaints from actual blind people?

The way this usually goes is that there is some actual blind person involved somewhere. I think we're mainly props, though.
As far as I can tell, they didn't reach out to any blind stramers or anything. Some relevant links:
The only thing that has the power to offend me is people assuming that I will be/should be offended.

By their own logic Twitch might as well change the name of their platform because there's absolutely going to be a few snowflakes who suffer from seizures, muscle twitches or spasms and what not who will be offended by the name "Twitch".

As a visually impaired casual streamer on Twitch, I'll gladly sign this petition.
If anyone gets offended by the blind playthrough tag, they should just go hide under a rock for a few years. Perhaps then they'll toughen up.

What you said.
I'm amazed that anyone can deal with sight problems for years and still be affected by this stuff.
DrillInstructorJan4 points2y ago
Sure, I would. Not that I use twitch.

I'm visually impaired, not a Twitch user but generally interested in the issue. The term "blind playthrough" does not offend me. But if the idea to do away with the term came from complaints from people with visual disabilities, then I support changing it. I doubt that anyone is crying themselves to sleep over the term. But if changing terms like this can help people feel a little more included, then go for it.

I don't think that's a good idea. It's preaching avoidance. The last thing any mental health professional will suggest anyone do is to run away from stuff they find painful, at least in the long term. Nobody should be feeling negative emotions over people using a term like this when nobody means anything by it. Anyone who does needs to work on that, not run away from it.

I don’t know not really on twitch but I find it more amusing then offensive that they took offense to the term. The term seems harmless.

The partition doesn't mention making twitch more screen reader accessible

I signed it. Twitch needs to be held accountable for their accessibility though I use it and it works for me.
