Help! Tips for audio and/or reading devices or software for 85-year old Visually Impaired Dad (self.Blind)
submitted by COtoMD2020
My dad's macular degeneration is so bad that's he's lost his ability to read any time of small/medium print. He used to read a book every week. He used to read the newspaper in its entirety every day of the week. Now, sadly, he can't see the letters/words well enough to read and it really is affecting his quality of life. He wants to try to read (in HUGE font) and/or listen to books and he would really love to read/listen to his hometown newspaper - The Denver Post. I'm wondering if I should get an iPad for him? A Kindle Oasis? Some other software? Any ideas? Please let me know. Thank you.

The best thing would be to get an appointment with a low vision specialist and let them help guide you. Each person is different.

You should try looking into an iPad. I like the app Voice Dream Reader. You could help him learn how to use magnification and VoiceOver. He might like an Audible membership too.

I'm assuming you're in the United States since you mentioned The Denver Post. Your dad should be able to sign up for library service through NLS ( loc.gov/NLS ) and sign up for Newsline to get newspapers by telephone or email

An iPad will give him so many more opportunities. It has built in magnifying, zoom or use it with VoiceOver, iOS built in screen reading software. He will have the option of audio or huge font. An app like. Voice Dream reader is a greAt tool for reading. A scanning app like office lens, genius scan, or one with OCR would allow him to have print and hand written content read aloud to him. A low vision specialist can show him how to use these features.

There are so many options, so a specialist appointment would be best
