Fusion/JAWS and Windows System menus problem (self.Blind)
submitted by OddRedd
Hello everybody, I hope this is a good place to ask this. I'd also be thankful for suggestions about other online sources or communities for trouble shooting with assisstive technology, especially screen readers.

I work at an institution in Switzerland where we teach visually impaired people to use their computers with their keyboards and assistive technology, in our case mainly ZoomText and Fusion. Now we currently have the problem, that the notebooks our clients use and those we employees use do not function the same way, even though the notebook model and both the screen reader version and the Windows 10 build are identical. Our/My notebook reads the windows system menus (for example the projecting menu (Win+p) or the dialogue to select a wi-fi network) just fine. The client notebooks ony utter one single word for the whole menu, (e.g. "projecting" for the projectin menu). With my residual vision I can make out that the focus moves correctly when using tab, but Fusion is mute. When I request the current focus it just repeats the menu title.

Does anybody have an idea/suggestion what could be the problem? For a while the notebooks had different versions and we strongly hoped the problem would go away when the client notebooks receive their updates.

My thanks in advance

Have you contacted Vispero?
OddRedd [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Who/what is Vispero? I should probably add that we're based in Switzerland, not in the US.

Vispero is the company that owns JAWS. Freedom Scientific is one of their brands. As you're not in the US, you would contact your distributor instead.

Ah yes, thanks for that info. I haven't, but probably should.

There is a groups.io list for JAWS. There is most likely 1 for fusion as well.

That sounds promising. I'll check that out, thanks!

Update for the interested:

With a coworker I found out that all the "mute" menus either have ShellExperienceHost or immersivecontrolpanel running in the background. We detected that with the nifty JAWS command "JAWS key+ctrl+v" which reads you the version number of the active program.

With this we also detected that our clients notebooks do not have the same version of the ShellExperienceHost which could be the problem as this part of Windows 10 is apparently in charge of displaying a lot of things.

I'm working with the IT department to maybe update this. We'll see if it does anything.
