Do you think a website containing free 3d models of things like bacteria and viruses, objects in the space, tactile maps, etc. for the blind would be a good idea? (self.Blind)

Here’s a link to a nonprofit organization that does printing work for blind people for free. I’ve met the founder of this nonprofit organization and found her incredibly easy to talk with about three-d models and accessibility for the blind community. I encourage anyone on this sub threadto check out the service provided by C3 D.https://see3d.org/request_info

Feel free to message me. I have several printers and love this idea.

This sounds like a great idea, especially if implemented properly. Instead of solely for blind people though, why not branch out a bit? For example, having a bunch of 3D printed DNA strands for kids to check out at school may be quite beneficial, etc.

If you're adamant on pursuing this, and need help on the software end up handle the user accounts, storage of 3D printer files, etc... drop me a DM. Could maybe also help with reaching out to various organizations around the world to help find facilities for 3D printing, etc. Don't have a huge amount of spare time for additional unpaid open source work, but still peaks my interest.

It may be worth building on an existing platform like Thingiverse, but this idea is certainly worth thinking about. 3D printers are coming down in price. Braille is definitely possible, but there are ways to make it work that I'm still learning.
Tactile graphics in 2D are also something that I would love to see collected in one spot. Those can be printed on various embossers, especially from Viewplus or using thermoform.

Like Thingiverse?

It is possible, but the access to the 3D printer is probably the current biggest issue. I've done some experiments with 3D printing stuff for people with vision loss, and the success has been mixed. One of the biggest issues.... Braille does not come out well.

I've been able to use one at the library, but it does require a bit of planning ahead. I expect as the prices come down, it would become easier to access as well.
