How to Set Up iPhone SE for the Blind? (self.Blind)
submitted by lalalinnb
Hello again everyone!

My brother got an iPhone SE recently and I'm not sure how to set it up. The accessibility feature is on, but past that point are there any tips or tricks I can teach him?

Can he just ask Siri to make a phone call for him, or do I need to set that up?

How can I help him answer the phone? Is there a command that he can say that is easier than swiping the screen to answer or deny a call?

Is there a way to read the name or number of someone who calls him so he knows who it is before he answers?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

In the settings app go to Siri and search and make sure Hey Siri is on choose always on if he wants to ask her to do something without pressing the home button. He can ask Siri to make calls for him. I don't know what level of sight loss he has and if he uses Voiceover the screen reader? For answering calls if you go into phone settings and down to incoming calls press full screen rather than banners. In full screen, when a call comes in he feels the bottom of the screen and the accept and decline buttons are there and if he uses Voiceover he just needs to double tap on either button. If he does use Voiceover I can try and help farther if you reply to this Reddit post. Also I have a YouTube channel with some videos me using Voiceover on iPhone and iPad. Also Apple's website has a page dedicated to accessibility features on all of their products including how to set them up. Apple also has a number for accessibility technical support I've called many times for help or with questions: 8772043930

Yes to this. If he’s not using VoiceOver he should give it a try. There’s a bit of a learning curve, but once you learn all the gestures it’s a game changer. There is a VO tutorial in iOS it’s helpful.

Thank you so much! You've been a huge help already. He uses voice over, but he hasn't actually used it yet because he got too frustrated with it. I'm trying to get the hang of using it, so I'll check out what you suggested!

I find using pause speech and speech off shortcuts help me not get as frustrated with VO. Like if I know how to get to an app and don’t want to hear all the stuff I’m swiping through I turn speech off with a 3 finger triple tap.

Glad I could help. I don't mind helping if you have any other questions. He'll get the hang of it.

Thank you again. We're going to work on it over the next couple days and get him using it.

Just get use to voice over it will take some time but learning it is a good investment of his time. I can do anything I want because I can use voice over. Or most things.

I think you can double tap with two fingers to answer the phone call and then double tap again to hang up.

Voice-over sometimes reads who’s calling and sometimes it doesn’t.

If he flicks/swipes to the left or right, with one finger he should be able to read who is calling.

Applevis.com is a great website with guides on getting started.

Remember, he can connect a Bluetooth keyboard to the phone if he wants, but it will have shortcuts he’ll have to remember.

What exactly is he frustrated with?
