I've never been able to figure out what is considered 'disabled' when it comes to sight. I'm in the U.S.
Is it a specific prescription? A specific eye disease?
I'm trying to figure out if I am actually considered legally blind.
My prescription is -8/20 Or 20/800(i think?)
(I'm not asking anyone to diagnose me or anything, I just want to know what's considered legally blind.)

Talk to an opthalmologist. It's not just about your vision with/without correction, there can be other factors too.
I saw a new doctor a couple years ago after moving to a new city. I had seen the same one for almost 20 years prior to that. Old doc never mentioned legal blindness. The new doctor basically said that even tho my vision is actually correctable to 20/25, the fact I am also monocular and have limited visual field (I forget the % or degrees remaining) in my "good" eye, I am legally blind. Nothing had changed from the prior year, but then again I had never asked the old one.

Good advice! Once I have insurance i will do this.
Ditzy_FantasyLand3 points2y ago
Probably best to talk to an eye doc. or disability lawyer. IIRC the IRS has a definition for tax purposes. I think it was to be *not* correctible to better than 20/200.
Zorukia [OP]2 points2y ago
Hmm, but my aunt is also considered legally blind but has contact lenses for correction. I guess i'll talk to an eye doctor
Zorukia [OP]1 points2y ago
Ok, that makes sense!
chovihanni-VIP2 points2y ago
According to the laws...it is only 2. Visually acuaty no better than 20/200 with correction or if your visual field is less than 20 degrees. Thousand of diagnosis though. Also can be brain or eyes. Mine for instance is from a traumatic brain injury. Nothing to do with my eyes at all.
Zorukia [OP]1 points2y ago
That's interesting!

Legal blindness is often determined based on visual acuity, but can also be determined by other factors such as peripheral vision.
Zorukia [OP]2 points2y ago
I"ll have to talk to my aunt, too, then. She's legally blind but has hard contact lenses and is able to drive and isn't on any disability or anything. We have the same prescription, but i wonder if her visual field is smaller.
Early-Time2 points2y ago
To make a determination, you might need to get a visual field test in addition to the acuity(eye chart) test. Not sure where you live but if you’re in the US, If you arent pursuing disability or other resources, there isn’t really any point to this. I’ve lived in a few different states and the only time I had to get a written document stating I was legally blind was in Florida for a bus pass.
Zorukia [OP]2 points2y ago
Yeah i'm in FL. My curiosity is if Insurance would cover corrective surgery if i got it to correct my vision if i was technically legally blind.
Early-Time2 points2y ago
And ophthalmologist can test acuity. It’s been ages since I did the field vision test so I don’t no the details on that but something to look into
chovihanni-VIP2 points2y ago
No problem. Always hope to educate😊

Legally blind is determined by a doctor. They would be the one to “certify” legal blindness. The numbers that count are usually “No better than 20/400 corrected vision”. Also, you could have perfect 20/20 vision but have a small field of vision. I believe it will s 20% field of vision. That would also count as legal blindness.
I don’t know what state you are in, but I believe all states have a Commission for the Blind, they usually keep a registry and up to date with the laws.

I'm in Florida! I'll see what I can find out about it. Thank you!
chovihanni-VIP1 points2y ago
If the contacts make her able to see better than 20/200 then she is not legally blind. If she is driving with 20/200or worse with contacts she is legally blond AND driving illegally. If you can be corrected your not legally blind. If her legal blindness is causing lack of visual field instead of acuity that is legally blind as well. If you lack a visual field you are supposed to go through a disabled drivers instructor. Many just don't for fear of losing license. They don't think the other option is possibly killing someone you didn't see at all
Zorukia [OP]1 points2y ago
She seems to be a good driver. I'l have to talk to her about it.
chovihanni-VIP1 points2y ago
Telescopic lenses are not for driving. Bioptic driving is possible for some though.
Zorukia [OP]1 points2y ago
That's interesting! I know there's a wide range of legally blind, so i'm sure it varies, too!
chovihanni-VIP1 points2y ago
Many diagnosis fall under this. I am legally blind with low vision. My diagnosis is Left Homonymous Hemianopsia which means I have NO left visual field at all in either eye(completely blind to left). This alone however does not qualify under current blind guidelines. But, the visual field I have left cannot be corrected better than 20/250...this qualifies as legally blind but in the diagnosis it is the "low vision " part and the legally blind is the complete blind area of my eyes. Confusing. Your eye professional should tell you if your legally blind and probably fill out paperwork to remove your driving privileges if applicable.
Zorukia [OP]1 points2y ago
I go to eye doctors often and no one has ever mentioned legal blindness. My aunt is legally blind and still drives with no issues. She has hard contacts.

https://www.disability-benefits-help.org/disabling-conditions/vision-loss-and-social-security-disability But probably be best, like already suggested, talking to a doctor or the disability office.
Zorukia [OP]2 points2y ago
Thank you!
Midget_Katt2 points2y ago
You're welcome! I hope you get it figured out!

Can't drive
chovihanni-VIP1 points2y ago
There are blind drivers programs. There are lots of aids for adaptability. You only have to see far away and the big stuff. Some are fitted with bioptics. This is a huge misconception. Ever wonder why that ATM machine has a headphone hook-up? Now you know.. Blind drivers
thicccdragon1 points2y ago
Thank you
Zorukia [OP]1 points2y ago
I don't think that's true everywhere Some people use telescope lenses
thicccdragon0 points2y ago
Telescope lenses to drive? Bruh. Stay off the road for everyone's safety
Zorukia [OP]1 points2y ago
I don't use them. I'm saying that what you said wasn't conpletely true. Sorry that you got offended.
