My grandpa has recently lost his sight. (self.Blind)
submitted by heyitshann
Hey guys! My grandpa has recently lost his site to glaucoma. He’s learned how to do a lot of stuff by himself but the one thing he can’t master is answering the phone. As far as I can see there isn’t a setting on an iPhone that lets you answer it with your voice. Maybe I just haven’t looked hard enough? Any answers, tips, or tricks?

There are some round about clunky ways to do this such as auto answer and attaching a Bluetooth headphone but the most reliable is to turn on Voiceover. With Voiceover on he can answer and end calls with a two finger double tap anywhere on the screen. Some older adults can be resistant to learning voiceover because there is a learning curve, but it’s the best way for someone who is blind to use a smart phone. Siri can’t do everything. Teach him the two finger double tap and that’ll take him a far way in learning more about his phone.

I believe I qualify as “some older adults”. There is a learning curve but one day things just clicked for me and I got it to work. Voiceover is awesome.

That’s awesome! I used to work with adults and one of the things I taught was Voiceover. It could be tough to convince some of them that it would get easier one day. It was always so satisfying when it clicked!

Hi! If you haven’t already, turn on Voiceover. It lets blind people use an iPhone without any vision. For answering and ending calls, you can use the “magic tap” by tapping twice with two fingers to answer and end calls. It’s a little finicky, so it’s best to be deliberate when performing it. Voiceover isn’t too difficult to master the basics, and it’s a serious quality-of-life improvement for anyone who can’t see well enough to use the phone visually.
