Definitely sounds like a fresh experience for you! Thanks for the detailed response. My wife and I spoke to a lending officer but he didn’t seem knowledgeable about it.

It really depends on the type of assistance you want. If you are looking for financial assistance I have no clue. As you probably saw another person had some suggestions on that front. If you’re just talking about getting a feel for the house, having a realtor who understands your needs, etc., then I doubt there’s anything official but it’s also not that hard to find.
When I bought my first house in 2009 my boss actually suggested the realtor that I used. I called her, explained my situation, and she picked me up from my apartment and drove me to multiple locations and took the time to walk the house and surroundings with me.
That house was on the edge of Austin. The city decided to change their transportation routs and not grandfather anyone in. That house was out of the new area. So when that happened, a couple of years later, I sold that house and bought a new house. My fiancé at the time, who is now my wife, was a realtor so she understood me and what I was looking for. We found a house together.
My third house which I bought in 2018 isn’t going to be any more help than the second. We moved away from Austin and to a rural area closer to my family. My wife isn’t a realtor anymore but my sister is. Obviously that wasn’t a big deal.
If you’re looking for advice on getting through the loan papers or the things you should look for around a house just let me know and I’ll try to provide more of that.

I’m ok with getting around since my vision is still good enough. We’re looking to stay in the same area since I’m familiar with everything here.
I was asking about assistance in getting a loan (which I clearly didn’t convey). Now that I can’t work and I’m on a fixed income from SS disability it seems like getting approved would be harder.

I understand and can’t help as much with that. Due to kidney failure and dialysis being something that used to beat the crap out of me I actually wasn’t working when we bought this house, but between my investments and my wife working it wasn’t a big issue.
Most good realtors will have loan officers they work with. I would either make the acquaintance of a realtor who can recommend a good lender or try to contact and talk to multiple lenders. Take the time to explain your situation and see what they can help you with. If you have half decent credit and stay within your means you can probably get an FHA loan. You might have to jump through a bunch of holes to do it, because government, but you can probably get one.

You haven't told us where in the world you are...
in the UK, those on a low income can get financial assistance with paying rent. There's no specific aid for mortgage payments as far as I'm aware. There are part-buy schemes where you pay a lower rental portion of the value, and also some managed living properties for disabled people who need more help. But to answer the specific question, no.

Sorry, it’s me always assuming the world revolves around the US. Thanks for trying though!

a very American thing to do ... that, aside with your propensity to throw around state acronyms as if the rest of us don't matter. ;) sorry I couldn't be more help.

I don't know about assistance but I would recommend that you look for places that have good public transport links near by and supermarkets near by. If you are getting a mortgage then you should ask your bank to provide you the materials in Braille or digital format.
