My girlfriend (45) is completely blind. close to 2 years ago I have managed to get her to transition to an iPhone 6s from an old T9 Nokia phone. She loves the added functionality an iPhone gives her, easier calling, whatsapp, audiobooks and email.
Her 2 year contract is about to run out and it's time to think about another iPhone. I am used to android, love it and will never change.. But for her I believe another iPhone is the way to go. With the 6S she still has the home button. In newer iPhone that has disappeared. What would be a good next model for her? A big screen is useless, but how does it work without a new homebutton when you're completely blind? She's a basic user, doesn't care about tech only wants to know the basics so she can do the things she wants to do.
Any advice appreciated.

If she's used to the home button same classic design, iPhone SE 2020 can be considered,, same size as the iPhone 6 7 8, it has the iPhone 11 spec processor baked into the body of the iPhone 8, which will be good

Seconding the second generation iphone SE. I got it for my (legally blind) teenged kiddo, and she loves it. I think it will last several years too, because the guts of it are very updated.

Indeed this is the best device made, when it comes to the classical design and touch ID for biometric process

Maybe I should just forget oled and consider it. One other thing is I was kind of wanting a headphone jack, but I think you can get an adaptor for iphone for it. Also, yes apple seems to update their phones for a long time! I now someone still receiving updated on an iphone 6 or 7.

Some carriers have even had deals for a free SE lately too.
Since I am not totally blind, I was kind of wanting one with oled screen, such as the 12 or 11 pro or something, but they are so expensive! A great deal on a samsung a71 5g, but it sure looks washed out pic to me.

I'm using the iPhone XS Max Primarily.

If you go to a model without a home button, it’s not much bigger of a shift for Blind users than it is for sighted folks. Instead of the home button, you drag up from the bottom of the screen, and it takes you home. Instead of double pressing to get to the app drawer, you just lift from the bottom a little bit further. There’s sound and haptic feedback from VoiceOver for both of these, so it’s not hard to tell the 2 actions apart.

I have read all comments. I appreciate all input. We will be going for the SE 2020 . Like I said before she's a basic user, just uses the voice over (and screencurtain).
I'd like to get her to use everything more, but this is all she wants.. ;-)
It doesn't sound like it'd take her much time to get used to, since she's already a proficient VoiceOver user.

No home button is small chunk of change. I use an ipad and iphone daily without a home button and is totally blind. So yeah. I would say get the 12. And the latest models is always safest they last the longest.

I have again read all the comments and I appreciate ya'lls input.
Unlike me (Android/root/chromebook/linux...) my g/f only wants to know stuff that helps her out here and now. Your very basic Apple user I would say. I find it difficult to help her out since she doesn't want any help.. ;-) I can see her doing so much more with all her gadgets. But that's my hangup, she's happy and I have accepted that she doesn't want more. The only issue was the disappearing homebutton that got me a wee bit worried.
Anyways, thanks everyone

I switched from the iPhone 8 to the iPhone 11 in and I have not had any problems. I would recommend going to the Apple Store if you have any concerns they were very helpful in showing me the benefits of using with a home button and without.

I would recommend the iPhone SE. It still has the home button so it won’t be too hard of a transition for her.

I don't use iOS, but I know the gone button has been replaced with gestures and I've heard good things about the functionality and usability. For somebody who's used to VoiceOver it shouldn't be too hard to get used to an extra couple of gestures.
For the latest functionality and longest lifetime, you could consider the 12 mini.
If she doesn't look at the screen at all, make sure she uses curtain mode, which turns off the backlight to save battery and hide what you're doing from prying eyes.

Have all iphones in the past couple years gotten rid of the home button? I actually liked it having that button when using someone else's...
MostlyBlindGamer1 points2y ago
The SE 2020 has the same body as the 6S so it still has the home button. It's fine everywhere else. I also can't think of any Android phones coming out with physical home buttons lately.
dunktheball2 points2y ago
oh ok. thanks. only thing is I see it's a lot smaller phone than I was hoping to get. I wanted one bigger than my current phone and my current one is about that same size. A shame because xfinity mobile has a deal where if you switch to them you get a free iphone se 2020.

I hear the battery life isn't amazing either. If you care about the screen size, consider the 11. If, like me, you use dark mode and care about OLED, look at the 12.
It's a lot easier (read cheaper) to get big OLED screens running Android. Screen reader usage isn't as nice though. Magnification is actually pretty convenient.
