Need help making website screen reader friendly (self.Blind)

I work for a company. We're trying to make our website more accessible. A part of that is making our website screen reader friendly. Since I am lucky with great vision, I am not able to understand the challenges visually challenged people face. Would love your help and feedback on this. I'd like to get on a video call and watch you use our website and take notes on the issues you face.
In case someone can have a quick look. The website is https://airmeet.com Please try registering for any event. And if you could try attending an event, that would be insanely helpful.

Hey,

I'll give it a quick look over, but I do accessibility testing to earn money so if you want a big in depth report unfortunately I can't do that for free. I'll try registering though, see what I get. I use chrome with jaws 2018 on a windows 10 machine in this instance.

1. You aren't lucky because of sight. Being blind does not make us unlucky.

2. You are compensating people for their expertise on how to help you make your site accessible right?

3. We are not specimens to be recorded and studied. There are tutorials on how to make websites more accessible in contrast, size, user-friendliness etc.

Oh jeez dude give the guy a break. Ronak, you're fine. If you post a link to the site I'm sure someone will go give it a once-over. Obviously it'll be a pretty quick first impression, but that may be helpful.

Being blind does make me unlucky. I just try not to let it turn me into an asshat.

Nope, I will not give them a break. I'm sorry you see your vision as unlucky. It's frustrating sometimes, sure. Sorry you think I'm an ass, just tried of seeing people ask for the labor of blind people without much research or compensation. It's rampant in this sub, and it's frustrating that people constantly think it's fine without putting in the leg work. Back up and don't tone police me. My experiences are valid, and the response I have is valid

You don't get to define my experience as a person with a disability. You do not get to tell me what is or isn't healthy for my experience. You come into a sub with blind people and tell them how to feel?

Fuck right off with that, please and thank you. That is some disrespect stuff. I'm allowed to be outraged, but I'm not outraged at being blind. I am upset with with asking for labor without any compensation. I'm upset with racism and discrimination on a global scale. I'm upset with so much more, but it's not about my eyes.

Wow... Negging may work over on r/IndianGirlsOnTwitter but you came here asking for help, yet are being openly offensive and dismissive of people with legitimate and valid views.

It’s apparent that English is not your first language, so please take this as a piece of free advice.

People are far more willing to help when you at least pretend to respect and value their input. Learn a little civility and interpersonal skills. Acting like you resent participating in a conversation sticks with you for a long time. Remember, all someone needs to do see your past behavior of dismissive and offensive behavior is click on your name.

Woah buddy, I’d give the guy a break. I get it gets annoying having a lot of people not know how to address the topic of blindness or the correct terminology but I would have been a lot less direct and accusatory. I would have said “most people don’t view it as unlucky or a negative thing”. Most people aren’t taught this kind of thing, I certainly was not until I started losing my vision.

Also he was asking for suggestions like making sure pictures and ads aren’t in the middle of the text not asking for people to test drive the website (at least that is what I got from his post).

Just tried your site using Safari in iOS using VoiceOver, and it is absolutely terrible. You guys are *really* far away from any level of WCAG compliance. Unlabeled buttons, images missing alt text, no discernable structure to the site since there are so many headings with no hierarchical structure at all. I won't give you a free audit since I am paid for my accessibility and usability testing services, but your site needs a lot of work, especially on the mobile front.

User testing is good, but you should only do it after it conforms to web accessibility guidelines, ideally WCAG 2.1 Level AA.

Hi basically if you’d like this done properly please offer to pay people and don’t expect people to help you for free with this kind of thing. When they’re paid professionals to also do it.

Seems decently accessible website wise. I just quickly went over it with my ipad, voice over and safari.

Seems like a interesting concept.

Is there an ios app and can I find this on the app store. May try it out seems like an interesting idea. I know this was a while ago so are you still looking for feedback.I am not a professional and probably will only give surface stuff so yeah.

The website is OK, except I didn't have enough time to read the text on the side scrolling banners.

It's also hilariously mistranslated in at least one language. I mean laugh out loud, grab your belly in a fit hilariously. I would tell you which language that is, but you're also not paying for localization quality control, are you?

The site itself seems fairly accessible with a screen reader from my brief look. Of course the real issue is using the conferencing software, the website is pretty static in comparison. Have you considered doing any trials with blind or low-vision users using the platform specifically?

Hey, thanks for your feedback. I haven't tested it with visually challenged people. That's what I wanted help with. I'm trying to do these trials but don't know what the usual process is. I'll figure it out. Good to know we're fairly accessible.

I'm afraid in this sort of situation the site is the tip of the iceberg. As a blind person I don't care if the site itself is a bit of a pain as long as I can present, or attend an event, accessibly. Whether chat messages at tables are acccessibly navigable, whether microphone and camera controls are convenient, how much of what is presented to the audience is accessible without site etc. You've already got platforms (zoom, Google Meets, Teams etc). You'd need pretty compelling a11y to make the BVI community switch.

That makes sense. I tried using NVDA and our camera on/off, mic on/off buttons weren't labelled right. Table and chair navigation also needs work. We want to make sure disabled people can also use our platform but we aren't targeting the BVI community specifically right now.
