People of r/blind, what do you do for work? I need inspiration. (self.Blind)

I have usher syndrome type 2 and my detiorating vision is forcing me to think about moving careers. I work as a microbiologist currently so a large part of my job is looking at tiny microbes. This is getting more difficult with each passing year and I feel I maybe have 3-5 years left in this job position.

I'm not sure what to switch to. I like being a microbiologist but I don't love it either so I probably would be happy doing a lot of things. I think if the people are nice, the hours are good and the pay is ok, I'll be happy - which is what I have in my current job.

I'm a teacher currently finishing up my master's. Looking into PhD down the road for research and teaching at universities. What do you like about microbiology? What do you dislike?

I suppose I like the problem solving aspect of it. I considered research in molecular biology, even for my own disease, because I had an interest and it felt like destiny even if I don't believe in destiny. But I decided against it because I felt it would have been an emotional decision to pursue research into my disease and I'd rather someone smarter than me doing the research lol. I also like people but hate customers or being in service of others. It's a reason why I picked STEM.

I got into investing recently because I also been thinking how the hell am I going to be able to ever afford a treatment for my visual impairment if it ever came about. I'm enjoying investing but it's more because I'm actually doing quite well with it rather than the practice of investing. I was thinking of studying some financial tech.

I don't really like writing research or publications. It.fills me with a lot of dread and I stress too much about it. I can't look at some of my old writing because it makes me cringe hard.

Sorry that's probably a bit incoherent. It's just my own meandering thoughts on the subject. Thanks for the response. They were good question you posed!

I work in event planning and copywriting. Perhaps you can work on your writing skills and pivot to writing case studies about micro biology? I'll tell you, there's an insatiable hunger out there for technical writers with strong scientific backgrounds. Just something to think about.

I work in telecom in a network operations center.

The people are ok, the pay allows a middle class lifestyle, but I would not recommend the hours.

I've interviewed at a few NOCs, but never got a job. One guy actually offered me a job, but rescinded it later, I think because of schedule conflicts. Another one just flat out said he didn't think I could do the job (super illegal btw).

Any advice for climbing the ladder? I've got plenty of certs and an IT associates degree, as well as an unrelated bachelor's.

At the moment political science student and thinking of changing over to assistive tech. I do a lot around the blind community but most of that is on my own time and voluntary. Advocacy and mentorships and such.

Have you considered working as a statistician? You will likely need to get another degree, but it sounds like you would not have too much trouble considering that you are a microbiologist. It is an in demand job that pays extremely well while also being computer based. Your job is to collect and evaluate data that your employer needs in order to make decisions and assess current trends. For example, Apple decides on what phone colors to make based on data collected by statisticians.

I work in IT.

I'm not too familiar with microbiology, but have you considered pivoting into less experimental areas like bioinformatics, mathematical biology, or statistical genetics? I would guess that laboratory and experimental components of the job would present the most difficulty in terms of accessibility. On the other hand, mathematics and programming can much more easily be made accessible. I'm a programmer and a mathematician myself, and almost completely blind, and I'd be happy to answer any questions you have about that. These are all areas that are sought after in industry, as well.

Hi, thanks for the response. This is an area I'd be interested in pursuing. Is programming accessible? It always seemed pretty confusing even for sighted people. I'm going to try some online courses to see how I like it but I think it's likely I end up in an area like this. Would it be ok if I keep in contact with you on this?
SirJektive 1 points 2y ago
Oh yes, programming is very accessible. More than most things really, and there's a pretty established community for it.

And of course, feel free to message me anytime. I check my messages pretty often.

I'm a musician, sorry cliche blind person career. People are great, hours suck and pay is uneven. Doesn't sound like your sort of gig!

I work in the banking industry as a front line worker at the branch, doing all sorts of tasks both with clients and behind the scenes. I'm also a composer, sound designer, writer and voice actor on the side.
