Magnifiers (self.Blind)
submitted by dunktheball
It's been so many years since I got any magnifiers for reading books or papers. I haven't used any in many years, either. I am wondering if any much better ones have come along in recent years.

In the past, I'd say the ones I liked best were bar magnifiers and didn't even try whole page ones, though. the main problem I always had was either the magnifiers barely magnified or they were all shadowy over the print so hard to read still. Even ones with lights didn't light up well or had shadows.

I think I tried a bar magnifier and it was super shadowy and I couldn’t use it. I have ones that are completely clear and don’t leave shadows. I have no idea what it is, but it does say “ESCHENBACH Germany” on the side. I use them everyday. They’re a total life saver

Thanks. I can try to find out what those are. What type of shape are the ones you have? Are they like big sheets that cover whole pages? In school, my mom always just printed things out for me in large print or some text books came in large print, but I never really had any magnifiers I thought worked great.

Alright last time I’m going to bother you lol. (So sorry). Anyway, I found the company it comes from! https://www.eschenbach.com/products/stand-bright-field-makroPLUS-1426.asp

I want expecting this to still be in business AND have an English website. Anyway, this is the one I use most often, but I looked around and this website has pretty much anything in terms of magnification. Although, I do have to say that your issue of them not magnifying enough is something I’ve noticed too. I put the magnifier up to my eye and have whatsoever I’m reading not too far away from that. So if leaning over your paper all the time isn’t what you’re looking for, I’d suggest finding something else.

You could post a lot more replies and not bother me. I post tons of replies myself. lol. I am always interested in as much info as people find. I will look at them and think about things. What I really "should" do is like you did, go to a low vision place. I have been before, but it's been many years since I went and did any sort of evaluation or testing. Of course, now with the whole virus thing, it makes it harder to get much done anywhere. But that would sure be ideal to try things in person.

Yeah they do have things for you to try there. I recommend you go when you can. I’m happy I could help!

I just looked it up. The bigger one is called a dome. I’m not sure about the little one though. I know I had them ordered specially from a low vision specialist when I was little

These really work for me and they come in different sizes. Idk what a whole sheet looks like, but I have one that’s pretty big and it’s a hemisphere shape. And then I have a little one that sits in the palm of my hand. I have small hands lol

My daughter recently got a eschenbach makrolux . There are 2 types 1:2,2 and 1:3,6 I'm presuming these are to do with strength/magnification. She got to try them at a low vision clinic
