Numbers on Mac help (self.Blind)
submitted by appollo2020
Hey folks! I’m hoping I can find someone that can help me with this before I end up having to reach out for tech-support.
I would like to have a spreadsheet in numbers at tracks my stocks and automatically updates. There is a template for this but there’s one thing that’s missing from it which is the annual dividend yield. So, I added in a column that had the annual dividend yield but the problem that I’m running into is that it will not auto fill for any of the columns or rows.
For example: let’s say I have one stock of Apple. With the original template all I have to do is put in the stock symbol, AAPL, in the left column and the rest of the row fills out with relevant information. However, it skips the dividend column that I have put in.
Does anyone know how I would make this auto fill along with the other information? Apparently there’s a visual way to drag the auto fill from the top column, but, I can’t figure out how to get the auto fill to work either. The only workaround is if I focus on the cell below where a dividend is already filled in and click auto fill from column above it’ll fill-in but I would rather not have to do this for every stock that I own.
Thanks for any suggestions!

Try selecting the cell with the formula. Command C. Shift + command + down arrow. Control V. That should auto fill to the end of the column. But I can’t test it, sorry

That’s what I thought about doing, but, the formula that it enters is specific to that row so if I do that it feels in the same value for every single stock that I have.

I guess it’s copying rather than auto filling. I’m not sure why I thought it was smarter than that.

Perhaps this, I found on the web:

If you have a very large spreadsheet, the dragging method can be way too tedious and might not even be possible without errors. Give the below method a try instead.

1) Select the column that you want to fill down.

2) Deselect the header by holding Command and clicking it. (Only if you have a header cell)

3) From the menu, click Table > Autofill Cells > Autofill Down.

Thank you so much for your help! I finally figured it out!!!
What happen was that I inserted the formula for the annual yield, but instead of calling the cell that had the stock ticker in it I called the actual stock ticker itself. So when I tried to auto fill it just kept doing the same thing. Such a simple answer that took me hours of hitting my head against the wall LOL
All I did was change the first one from the symbol to the correct cell and then auto fill the rest and it automatically change everything the way it supposed to be

Sorry I can't help you with a substantive answer. Following.

Curious though, besides this issue, what are your thoughts on Numbers? I used it about 5 years ago, but have since migrated to the Google ecosystem. I still own a Mac though and would be interested in taking Numbers for a spin again.

It’s a really great program! I never knew how powerful it was until pretty recently. And it’s fully accessible
