Blind Guitar tips? (self.Blind)
submitted by GiarcN
A friend of my niece has recently become blind. He is 20. He is really hoping to be able to keep playing guitar. Anyone out there know of any resources, or have any tips/experience that might help?

(Sorry if this is a repeat. New here, and haven't taken the time to figure out searching)

My only advice would be to practice practice practice. Being blind won’t have too much effect on playing most any instrument. I come from a family of master musicians who are all blind. Once one is familiar with the fretboard there’s no limits.

I'm a blind guitarist and guitar teacher who has taught both blind and sighted students over the years. What exactly is he having trouble with now that he can't see? Would it be possible for you to get a short list of specific questions? That would be helpful. Thanks.

I will get back to you on that.

How well it how much does he play now?

I never got too into playing but I stuck a few little raised stickers on the back of the headstock so I could feel which fret I was on without looking. If he has limited sight and doesn't have to position of his strings memorized, they make neon guitar and bass strings which will make picking easier (bootsy collins has a brand). He'll have to make up his own tactile notes for amp and pedal settings if he uses them. Some clip on tuners will beep when a string is correctly tuned, probably an app is out there that will do the same.

I don't know of tab readers for the blind, but I'm interested in hearing if others know of ways to learn songs other than "by ear."

He was pretty good before he got sick. This and running are about the only 2 things that have really sparked much interest since he got out of rehab. But as far as I know he hasn't really done much with it. He does play by ear which will help.

I don't have any tips, but I'm interested to hear what anyone else has to say.

Totally blind here trying to teach myself to play correctly. I am not sure what method works best for my fretting hand, Jeff Healey played overhand with the guitar flat on his lap, and I know of three or four others who play the same way, some with a right handed guitar with the neck flipped to the right. I being right handed have been trying to learn this overhand lap method with mix results. I feel like I wouldn't be abled to form some chords. I think the hardest part about this overhand method is I am trying to learn with the neck to the left and trying to incorperate my thumb but maybe I am overcomplecating things. If you are in the United states and have access to barred they have many books on learning by ear. I am currently using Donald hoffers guitar method for the blind as a chord reference.

I lost my eye sight at age of 18, and i learned to play the guitar later on just with help from tutorials on youtube. Check out ‘your guitar sage’, his tutorials are easy and he explains things well.

Appreciate it. I'll pass the info on.

Jeff Healey was a blind guitarist.. maybe you can find something on the Internet about his techniques. UnFortunately he has passed away so I’m not sure if he ever wrote a book or not

After covid isn't an issue a teacher should be able to work with them fairly easily in person.
