Are there accessible online chatting tools? (self.Blind)
submitted by 8saku
I've heard that there are various web applications such as SpatialChat, Remo, and gather.town that can be used conveniently in place of Zoom or Teams when chatting with multiple people.

Have any of you used them with screen readers without any problems?

Before I try it myself, I would like to hear any know-how you have.

I use discord and WhatsApp the most and yes, they absolutely work with screen readers

Discord wasn’t so accessible but I think they are better now I hear I think there are some that are interesting ones I could join but I haven’t quite yet.

Discord has improved a lot last year, like literally so much

When it comes to groups, I personally always try to push everyone onto a group WhatsApp chat on my phone. Works best for me. All voice commands, supports group voice and video calls, etc. Only issue I have is when people send me URLs or attachments, I have to ask them to e-mail them to me so I can get them on my laptop.

Another I use is Slack. Not the greatest, but works fine and I manage to use it without issue. I don't stick around for small talk with it, but manage to get the work done.

I have Zoom on my phone, but don't like it at all. And can't get Zoom working on my laptop, although I think that has more to do with me running LINUX than it does using a screen reader.

WhatsApp seems to be a good idea. The problem is that WhatsApp is probably not used much in my country. But thanks to you, I can imagine how good it is.
