Asana via Screen Reader? Any Tips? (self.Blind)
submitted by Envrin

Does anyone here by chance use Asana who is totally blind, and goes off screen reader only? Can you get around on it decently? If so, any chance you'd be willing to share some tips?

I can manage to pop around to different projects and task lists just fine. Well, kind of, not really. I seem to be able to manage, and I can create new tasks in a given project as well, so that's cool.

Couple problems are, I can scroll through a table of tasks fine, but can't seem to click through to view details of any task. I can see the task name, status, who it's assigned to, and that in the table. However, can't seem to find a link or button that let's me view / manage the task details. Any help?

Other one is if someone replies to a task of mine, I'll get an e-mail about it with a link so I can click right through to the task details. However, on that page I can find nowhere to add a comment / reply. The only entry field is that search box. Oh, and that search box is annyoing as all hell due to its Javascript implementation -- slows the browser right down when it's focused.

If anyone could by chance give me some pointers, it would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to have to be the guy who forces everyone to copy and paste everything into Slack, just because I happen to be blind. They're all being really cool about it, but still, I'd prefer just to do same as everyone else on the team and use Asana.

So quick disclaimer: I'm on ChromeOS using Chromevox.

With that being said, I find Asana to be one of the more confusing apps to navigate, simply because of how cluttered it can get. Even a sighted AIRA agent commented on the poor layout.

So, I suggest using the Asana app instead of the web interface. I've found that cuts out much of the clutter.

I guess you could also try using your JAWS cursor, too.

Awesome, thanks for the response. Installed it on my iPhone, and ahhhh.... that seems much better now. The desktop version sucks, but mobile seems to work well.

Thanks again!

You know, I've been using Jaws for years and still don't really understand the multiple cursors. Could you maybe link to a resource explaining them and how to use them?

Oh, look at that... I marked this as "Hiring UK" somehow.

Thought I marked it as "Question". Oh well, this is probably a pretty good place to have a blind moment anyway, haha.

I use Asana often. I do find that the iPhone app is loads better, albeit still with some limitations. But from using Asana with Chrome on Windows with Jaws, I find that it's easier if you use the "Inbox" view or the "assigned to me" tab, which I believe is still located in inbox.

When you click on a task, it should expand at the bottom of the page. I usually jump from the table to the task using the letter E, which jumps me to the edit field containing the title of the task. At this point you can add comments, read the description, and view collaborators.

To reply to a comment you can also reply to the Asana emails directly.

Send me a PM if you get stuck. I use Asana every day.

I have never used this command, so these are just some general suggestions. I am blanking on the exact command, but maybe try, control + enter or shift + enter to expand the details within a list. Maybe check if there is a mobile app. If you are on Windows, try different screen readers. I have encountered situations in which a given program is only accessible with JAWS or only accessible with NVDA.
