Low vision and confused (self.Blind)
submitted by Blindsculptor
So, I don't know my visual acuity yet. I'll be having a serious discussion next appointment. Been struggling even getting treatment. But I'm blinded by glare, blinded by low lighting, constant haze and blind spots. I think I'm low vision. There are times each day that I can't see anything. My glasses prescription is strong and heavy and 3 years old...I'm scared to get my glasses updated. I was doing it yearly and needing it done before my insurance would allow which was annually. Since I'm using a cane and struggling with things like cooking I called a training and rehab place for things like orientation and mobility, and they told me my vision must be 20/70 or higher in both eyes or legally blind. They also said I don't need a referral? but that my doctor could fax notes from a medical visit. Then they said I needed to sign a medical release form with them, I called them out on why and they dismissed it. So does any of this sound right? There are no doctors there so a medical release with them makes zero sense. She sounded confused herself.

Their website says different things. I'm considering calling the place that they work for to verify. It appears I need to be seen by this one place for referral.

They don’t want any old person who is not blind or just want help and say they are blind or afraid they are blind to use their service even totally blind people like me need to prove blindness.

I would go to a eye doctor and get checked out and write a letter certifying you’re legally blind and you should be good to go if indeed you are. This should not be difficult.

It may depend on the agency, but here in Canada (Vision Loss Rehab), we have started to have clients (verbally, which is then electronically marked off) agree to privacy and other release of information forms, because we got integrated into the health care system and it's a government requirement now.

My agency also doesn't require an updated eye report/referral for Independent Living Skills and Orientation and Mobility training, but it is required for Low Vision services (or if they want to access government funding, because it is a requirement again).

If you aren't sure, call the agency and ask them what their intake requires. That should help clear things up.

Probably because they need to medical records to know how best to help you

I’m in the UK so can’t really help apart from saying call them and see what they say.
