Considering to publish a book written in braille (self.Blind)
submitted by shadowtempest91
I'm the author of a fiction book and I'm working to self-publish it. I'm considering the chance to produce a braille version of it, but I'm unsure if that would actually be appreciated compared to an audio-book.

I admit I imagine an audio-book to be more comfortable to "read", but for the sake of argument I checked out some websites and I see that some people actually prefer braille to audio-books and I'm interested in this. Is braille a thing for fiction books or is it a niche?

Maybe I'm stating the obvious here but wouldn't it be easier to just publish your book in print and collaborate with braille libraries and services like NLS Bard and friends?
I don't know to what degree that is a thing in the US, over here that is generally the procedure for print books being brailled and turned into audiobooks.

How many pages is your print book, approximately? Even a 200 page print book would be multiple volumes of braille.

276 pages in pocket format. Smaller than paperback. I read that this would translate roughly to a 700 pages book, in big format I suppose.

That’s really nice of you to do this. The best solution is honestly make sure it’s on ibooks and kindle and make sure kindle version is screen reader friendly and you’ll be great for those of us who do read braille still a good large handful though not everyone we have honestly not probably read a braille book, a physical one in eons!!!!!! I read braille through a braille display and do pretty well. So that’s my best suggestion it’s very kind you want to make it available to the blind population and make sure they can get copies too.

I think it really depends. I am legally blind and don’t read braille, but print is still really hard for me. I don’t read paper books anymore because the effort to do so is just too much and it hurts to lean over a book for an entire novel. Audiobooks is how I consume my literature, but not everyone is like me

I’d buy it!

I prefer audiobooks to braille books.
