motivational comments and empowerment, they cause unintentional pain. (self.Blind)

I play the piano. I don't consider myself that special, but whenever I I do it, in front of people, I get comments like the following…

"wow, you're sooo good" or "omg. god bless you." insert comparison to Ray Charles here. I've learned to bounce these comments off, but damn, it feels like being stabbed, and than having the knife twisted extra hard for good measure. They hurt. The same thing happens when people see me using a computer.

Yeah, these comments show ignorance and low expectations. They set the bar low, but I don’t think these people even know how patronizing they sound.

No one abled seems to understand. I've watched my blind SO code for 16 hours a day for pennies and end up with disc herniations and stenosis, which left her unable to use her hands for a while. I watched her hit hard with feelings of worthlessness. The mantra of "you can accomplish anything if you try hard enough" and disabled inspiration porn literally kills people. It's destructive and I wish people would understand that.

I had a dental hygienist ask me the other day who helps me floss??? WTF

The constant infantilization of disabled people is driving me nuts

Yeah. It really hurts, knowing that they most certainly don’t expect much from me. Also, being talked to like a child. I feel like that’s the same shit, ableist inspiration porn.

it's because for them everything we do is in "despite of having a disability" To them we're *a disabled* person, not a *person* with a disability who's just living their life

I find education at that point is useful or staying humble. I sometime show them even more inspirational stuff. It’s thisis normal that is not. Etc....
