"You need to look into my eyes or else you'll be considered rude."

Proceeds to reach out with cane and smack them in the face.

Fuckin relatable and IDK why but this post title absolutely SENT ME

I haven't had that specifically, I have been told to look like I'm paying attention.

I put on sunglasses and nodded every ten seconds.
MostlyBlindGamer 2 points 2y ago
Yes, but did you nod at the right person? Gotcha!
DrillInstructorJan 2 points 2y ago
I have a special nodding technique which is designed to look as if it encompasses more or less everyone in the room. Possibly I look a bit weird if we're alone.
MostlyBlindGamer 2 points 2y ago
Ah, yes, like the broad wave hello that covers the whole room.
DrillInstructorJan 2 points 2y ago
Or the experimental "Hello!" which is supposed to sound reasonably like a greeting if there's anyone else there, or a hopeful question if there isn't. I call it the train passenger hello.

Never happened to me. Don’t look like I am looking at them but I pay attention enough so yeah.

To sighted people- and neurotypical people, I'm autistic as hell- I must look so inattentive.

My eyes are drawn to light. They're often pointed towards the ceiling. I try to look at something, get eyestrain after a while, and end up with my fingers pressing at my eyes. Glasses on, glasses off, look at something brightly colored that I can see, then close my eyes because they hurt, then look at the lights again.

Like, sure, I'll look at your face, but I can't social distance at the same time. Get to be about a foot from my eyes and I can probably tell you whether you're smiling or not.

I used to get told to pay attention a lot as a younger teenager (I'm 19 now). If the battle's worth bothering with, "I'm LITERALLY blind" is always a fun response.

I’m also autistic. Before my sight loss, I tried to maintain eye contact so badly that it almost seemed like I was looking into people’s souls lol
