Grandpa going blind (retinal detachment) (self.Blind)
submitted by BudgetFinding
Hello r/Blind, my grandfather who is 69, has been losing his sight for a while, he says he has retinal detachment, and that there is no cure/treatment for this. There was an operation but very risky and he could lose his sight completely in a week if it went wrong, so he doesn't want to do that.

We live in different countries very far apart so I can't come visit and help any time. But he is on his own and very bored, with nothing to do, can't read, winter time so no agriculture, etc. I was wondering if there's any way to make his life more comfortable, more accessive TV, audio books, anything. Another challenge is that he's given up and might not want to bother learning anything new, but I don't know. Can you give me some tips / point me in the right direction in regards to things that I could buy or that could help him live a bit better?

Thank you

Bookshare.org and NLS BARD for audio books If he’s in the US. You can outfit microwaves and other kitchen appliances with bump dots that he could feel to orientate himself.

He is not in the US but I might try to find something like that in Ukrainian or Russian. Good idea with the dots (if he wants to learn), he can still cook but he's using really old school kitchen appliances, I don't think he has anything like a microwave.

What did he like to do before he Los his vision for fun maybe he’d still be able to do it inside the house. If you can tell us there may be ways.

He might like an Alexa for listening to music, radio, and books by Audible.

Yep, that's a good idea too, as long as it's easy to use, just have to go there and set it up (or try to have someone do it for me).
