I am making a iPhone app which is a tarot card reading tool, with VoiceOver (self.Blind)
submitted by Canuckaoke
Hi, I have made a tarot card reading app called Tarot Simple, and I have tried to make the Apple VoiceOver feature really good and complete. If you are interested in helping with beta testing, here is the link:

$1

Any advice is appreciated! Thank you in advance if you are interested, and I hope you like it.

Update: thanks to everyone who helped me out by testing! I have posted an update to the app (which you can still try out via the TestFlight link above, if you don't have it already). I made a lot of the changes that you suggested and I think the app is much improved! I have tried to make a really good voiceOver app. This is the version I will probably put on the App Store, although I'm still interested in any feedback that you have. You can message me for the App Store links if you are interested in having a copy of the final app. Thank you all so much.

I've started testing the app, it seems pretty good. ιI'll send a detailed feedback later this week.

Thank you very much for spending the time!

I am looking forward to your VoiceOver comments. It was rather mysterious to program.

I just tested the app quickly and am really impressed! The only thing i’d say that could be improved is the, the title of this section is part.

Our screen reader will say the title of the heading, so we don’t need the this section is part.

I don’t need this app but am so impressed. If you have a paypal I’d be willing to give you a couple pounds for your work.

Hi, can I ask you another question? You mentioned using a screen reader. Is that a device in addition to your iPhone that you are using? I just ask because when I enable VoiceOver on my iPhone 8, those headings wouldn't get read out unless I had programmed it in, I don't believe. Does your screen reader read things out a bit differently than would just the iPhone by itself?

I’m using voiceover, it’s called a screen reader.

If you go on safari, and type in a webpage and press go, then turn on voiceover. Put two fingers on the screen and twist them like you’re turiing a dile until you hear headings, then flick down with one finger, you’ll hear how headings are spoken with voiceover.

Okay thank you for clarifying! I appreciate your taking the time

It’s already inbuilt most people just don’t know about it because they don’t use it so skip past it so it’s invisible to them. Hiding in plain sight.

Thank you so much for your kind words! This means a lot to me. I really appreciate the useful feedback you have given me about the section titles. Thank you for your generous offer, but if you would spread the word about my app to anyone who would like it, that would be a tremendous help!

From my limited survey, there are a lot of apps that don't have very good VoiceOver. Is that true? I might like to make such a claim on my App Store page, and to say that my app has good VoiceOver by contrast. Is that a claim that I could honestly make, in your opinion?

haven't tested your app yet but for sure you can say it has voiceover support. You can also create a help section inside the app explaining specific stuff you did for the app to go beyond mere button labelling. For example, hokusai 2, an audio editor, has some special gestures and shows stuff differently when you have voiceover on.

Thanks, good idea about making a VoiceOver help section. I don't know if I did anything out of the ordinary really, but I added pretty much all the labels, hints, and values, and also made certain things not reed out, when it made sense to do that. I tried to make it flow nicely, and hopefully quite useable.

Oh definitely:)

Something like my app has voiceover support.

Really good job! I have zero experienced with the tarot, but always wanted to try. Unfortunately, in the meanings section for some cards, voiceover just says printed page, and doesn’t read the actual meaning.
Canuckaoke [OP] 3 points 2y ago
Oh no! I will review for more carefully for those places where it says printed page. I thought I had it all fixed. If you have always wanted to try, then I will do my best! Would you be able to provide specifics, that is, where exactly did you have the problem? When I swipe through the card meanings on my device, the VoiceOver seems to read correctly. Also, what device version do you have, in case it has to do with that? Thank you so much for checking it out.

Edit: hey everybody, please chime in with details if you are having this problem also, thanks

I did a three card daily reading, and it happened on the knight of swords and queen of pentacles, but read fine on the nine of wands. Off topic, based on these cards I’m in for a heck of a day lol.
Canuckaoke [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Hi again, just trying to track down the VoiceOver problem that would cause the app to read out "printed page". Did this happen on an image? I wonder because you mentioned knight of swords and queen of pentacles, and those cards (among others) have text in the images, whereas the nine of wands (which you mentioned) does not. Makes me wonder if you have set a setting that causes iPhone to recognize that there is text (although not successfully)? I haven't so far reproduced the issue on my phone, I have an iPhone 8. I found out that iPhone 8 can't get the VoiceRecognition menu that is available on newer phones, so maybe that's something. Any thoughts?
siriuslylupin6 2 points 2y ago
Not in to tarot but have an idea based on this comment can you not do text in images but do a separate text field outside of image this means that it will always read it and won’t depend on iphone picture recognition thing.
HealthyChoice1363 2 points 2y ago
I would agree with you, that's absolutely correct voice-over recognition is only available for iPhone XS and higher
plus iOS 14 and above,
however a basic image description should be there? Just like Facebook has implemented alt text? Overall, good work I must say everything works as expected.
