Currently caring for my totally blind, 84 year old grandfather who is developing dementia - I need to find sticky braille labels.(self.Blind)
submitted by WhiteRumBum
Hello all. I am currently the full time carer for my 84 year old Grandfather who is completely blind from birth. Unfortunately he is rapidly developing some form of dementia (currently undiagnosed) and his memory is seriously suffering. Due to work commitments I cannot be with him 24/7 but he is frail and I am worried that he may fall when I am not there. If this did happen his best option would be to call me but he mostly cannot remember my number, or the number of any other family member. I was hoping to get some braille labels printed (the kind often found on signs or medication) which I could stick to the back of the phone so that he is able to find my number whenever be needs it. Does anyone know how I should go about this? I haven't been able to find anything suitable on Google. I am based in London, UK by the way. Thank you.

Braille Labeler. It is a label maker with a wheel of Braille and produces a strip of tape that you can stick to things.

When my mom couldn't hold a phone and would frequently fall and not be able to get up, my dad got Amazon Echo Dots for every room in the house. You can set it up so that the Echos can call by voice commands. Your father would only have to say "Alexa, call WhiteRumBum" and he'd be able to call even if he can't get himself up.

My dad was acutely blinded in an accident after he had retired. Alexa has been a great tool (among others). So much for him to learn and the head injury did not help. Alexa can connect to more traditional VOIP devices for phone (like Ooma) so 911 services can still be available.
That said, get your grandfather diagnosed and a specialist can get you better strategies for now and the future.

I wouldn't buy those braille stickers if I was you, as they're expensive for how many you get. For maximum affordability and ease of use, consider getting one of the braille tape gunns that the rnib sells, they're cheap, last a long time and the tape they use is easy to replace. The reason I don't suggest buying single use stickers is that costs quickly mount if you find yourself needing more than a few labels. With the sticker gun you can make as many as you need, when you need them.

Hi all, my girlfriend has found something. I've always been bad at searching for stuff... In case anyone else would find this useful I'll include the link below
Wouldn't one of those armbands with an emergency button be more efficient in this case? If he fell and couldn't move it might be hard for him to get to his phone (assuming he doesn't carry a mobile on him at all times like most older folk I know). As far as I understand it should be possible to programm one of these to call your phone. Braille labeling can still be great but I'm sceptical in the emergency context.

I have a braille label maker I don't use if any one really needs it.
