Blind friendly side hustle? (self.Blind)
submitted by BlindGirlSees
Does anyone have any recommendations for blind friendly side hustles? I am working full-time, but looking to make a little extra money for my wedding in 2022. No MLMs please. I was looking for something that I could pick up and put down, sort of the way you can decide when you drive with Uber. Although of course Uber is not an option until they give those self driving cars a final release. Lol.
I have experience with both jaws and voiceover screen readers.

Anything that involves tapping on a keyboard. I have been paid to write articles in the past. I'm a musician so I've written things on that subject, nothing to do with being blind.

If you're in any way technical, computer code is worth while and you can learn it for free if you have even a bit of inclination in that direction.

If you speak another language, you can do translation and interpretation work. Interpretation, where you do it live, is the best hustle but you need to be able to think fast. I used to speak quite decent Italian and did a bit of this in my 20s but I'd need to spend six months in Italy to get back up to scratch these days. If you speak Spanish and are in the southwestern USA you will be less rare, it depends.

If you do any craft stuff, set up an Etsy store, for to sell your wares. A distant family member did that and now does it full time and employs three people.

If you're a musician and can compose original stuff that's actually decent, figure out how to record it and get an account on one of the stock footage sites. Go there first to see what's popular. You need good sound engineering for this but don't be scared, it's very doable.

Sing. When I was really young I used to be in a three person singing group and we used to do wartime stuff for old folks. Wasn't very profitable but it was something.

There are all kinds of other things you can do like answering telephones but I lean away from the stuff that's just really dead end, you want something you can make a solid career out of if all else fails.

Congrats on the wedding! My boyfriend does some side work as a freelancer on UpWork. Might not be any help to you but there you go

I access test websites for money around my degree, might be a possibility?

How did you start?

If you're in the U.S., see if you can get on the tech or screen reader tutoring list for your state's department of the blind. They don't call very often for me, but depending on where you live you may get some clients. Easy work if you enjoy that type of thing.

Don’t you need to be certified?
Drunken_Idaho 1 points 2y ago
Call your states department and get them to evaluate you. It took me less than an hour to go through the whole process.

I don’t know of any, but I do have a question for you you might be able to answer. What web browser works best with Jaws? For some reason my Internet explorer no longer works in Google Chrome right now has been difficult to navigate
BlindGirlSees [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Probably fire fox. For me.

Use Firefox, Chrome or Edge Chromium. What do you mean by "difficult to navigate"?
Revenant624 2 points 2y ago
Let me preface this saying I am not very good at Jaws. LOL. The main reason I use jaws is for my Gmail account. I used Internet explorer fairly easily, but now that it doesn’t seem to work I am forced to use Google Chrome. I find it extremely difficult to get to the Gmail link and when I do sometimes it doesn’t work and I try to use the alt I command for the inbox and sometimes I get it and sometimes I don’t.

Is there a reason you don't use an email client? I think you would find that much easier than a web interface.
Revenant624 2 points 2y ago
Yes there is a reason. I have no idea what an email client is or where to find one. LOL maybe instead of saying I was not very good at jaws I should’ve said I’m not very good at computers. With an email client I would be able to upload and download files, etc.? I also do use the browser for some light shopping, but I’m not super comfortable doing it a lot so are usually do my shopping on my phone.
