Reading documents and etc. without a cell phone or electronic magnifier. (self.Blind)
submitted by Winnmark
Hey guys, like many of you I'm visually impaired, though not completely blind. I'd like to hear how some of you read menus, papers, books, documents, etc. when you absolutely must, or I suppose simply desire to, but you don't use your cell phone or an electronic magnifier.

I've read around some people use a short focus monocular. Is this recommended? If so, any particular models or brands?

EDIT: is anyone aware of bioptic glasses designed for short distances?

My husband uses a pocket magnifier. They sell them on ebay and amazon as fire-starting tools. It's a 2.5" 3x magnifier. We have them stashed all over and he carries one in his pocket at all times. Depends on your level of vision whether that is enough for you though. A jeweler's loupe as u/MostlyBlindGamer suggested would work if you needed more.

I also have a few - one in my pocket, one in the kitchen and one on my desk. They're cheap enough that it's easier to spread them around than to have to go looking for one. I always keep them in the same spots though.

For reading short documents I often use a jeweler's magnifier. It's only really practical for checking the return address on a package or a couple of lines like that.

Why not use your phone? What’s wrong with that? That’s the best way if not it cost a whole lot more I ocr it with k1000 with a huge flatbed scanner. I’ve scanned in entire books. About 50 to 70 of them.
