Silent Cars (self.Blind)
submitted by dunktheball
Jamie Lynn Spears was mentioning that electric cars cause cats to get run over, due to them being so quiet. the writer of the article made a good point that they can be a danger to visually impaired people also. I have noticed that before... where I was walking through a parking lot and out of nowhere a car was there because it was so silent.

ps I have met her before. lol.

Many guide dogs are trained around hybrid cars for this reason.

The NFB an American based organization has advocated on behalf of blind people to make silent cars make a noise so that blind people can hear them coming.
The only problem is that each silent car manufacturer has their own specific noise that their car makes. This is because the NFB believes that the blind need to adapt to society. Their blindness philosophy stands is how they approach issues.
All silent cars should make the same noise. The reason I say that is because most blind people are 65 plus and don’t always have the best O&M skills. Every silent car having their own specific noise makes it harder for them.
The same can be said for young blind people as well that don't have good O&M skills
Also people that have another blindness philosophy on this issue.

I think this would also be good as otherwise a row of cars would sound like a bad choir of chirps beeps and other noises which could bug local residents of a area

Haha! A good listener would be able to tell what kind of car it was kinda cool haha!

The UK government has passed a regulation that manufacturers must fit sound systems to quiet electric vehicles to prevent them being too silent,

> vehicles will now have systems to produce a sound when they are reversing or driving below 20 kilometres per hour (km/h, about 12mph) providing greater confidence to vulnerable road users

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/new-noise-systems-to-stop-silent-electric-cars-and-improve-safety

The RNIB are still campaigning on this as they see problems

I really do hope they tackle the driver being allowed to pause the alert if they feel it safe/necessary. That really does not fill me with confidence.

Having electric cars make noise is a great thing because it gives you a clue on when to cross or not cross. Unless you are depending on an audible signal. Which I believe most city’s don’t have for people to use.
How do you expect blind people to independently travel without car noise?

I am not blind but I’m angry these cars were not designed with blind and visually impaired people in mind. It’s so obvious that the cars are a danger, bloody tesla.

Over here in Europe I think by 2023 they have to make a tiny beeping sound for exactly that reason

I don’t exactly remember which year though

I'm sighted, my daughter isn't and my sister has a Nissan leaf. As a pedestrian I hate EVs. Non VI people use their eyes and ears to cross a road, car park etc. VI need to use their hearing also.

Yeah, definitely a real threat. I consider myself an excellent traveler and om&m good but.... this is definitely a problem and I don’t really desire a guide dog. So.... yeah. Hopefully this is widely implemented soon.

The sensors are not 100% reliable. Just like people’s O&M skills.
Silent cars making noise is just another tool that people can use in their favor to travel independently safely.
Also silent cars making noise helps out non blind people as well.

That is why you have your cane to give you a heads up on what is in front and all around you. And generally, you can hear people walking near you. Even if your deaf-blind your cane can help you out when avoiding people.
It does not work the same way when it comes to cars because by the time you know the car is there it is too late and your dead or seriously hurt.
Bumping in to people or people bumping into you is completely different from cars hitting you.

Beacuse Right now their the niche. But that is changing with many countries moving to ban gas cars from sale by 2030. Best to fix this early.

This honestly has affected me and is a growing concern when I travel.
