Can I stop being an inspiration now (self.Blind)
submitted by Crafty_Dragon_roll
I made a gingerbread house for Christmas and someone commented about it on my fb. How I am such an inspiration for making it. Ugh its just a gingerbread house, I didn't scale Mount Everest or anything. I'm just really tired of "inspiring" people by doing normal everyday things. Anybody else feel this way?
eddie_the_shit 28 points 2y ago
Abso-friggin-lutely. It gets old as hell hearing what amounts to "They did a great job, all things considered. Everybody join me in a round of pity applause because they clearly need the validation. (And don't forget to click 'like' on my post/comment about it.)"

We want to be treated as peers, not mascots.
Crafty_Dragon_roll [OP] 13 points 2y ago
Exactly! I just get so frustrated with shit like this. Sometimes its like people think I can't do anything at all, therefore when I do something its the greatest thing ever. No its not.

Oh hell yes, this on toast. Even my parents do it.

But it gets worse, because people assume that anything you ARE doing is due to some need to show off. I've been asked, why are you going on holiday. Well, to stay up late, drink slightly too much, eat really nice food without having to do the washing up, and not work for a few days. Oh what you're not climbing everest, pogo sticking up the sears tower or going over niagara falls in a barrel in aid of some sort of blindness charity? It's like letdown city any time you do something for a normal bloody reason.
Crafty_Dragon_roll [OP] 10 points 2y ago
Right. Oh and I just thought about this. Has anyone ever yelled at you because for some reason they think it'll help you see better? Its happened to me a few times.
DrillInstructorJan 5 points 2y ago
I wouldn't say yelled at. Some people get patronising, the thing where they pat your arm and speak slowly and clearly to you. My response to that is simply to be straightforward, friendly, confident... if they don't get it fairly quickly at that point they're likely not someone you'll ever want to be buddies with.
eddie_the_shit 5 points 2y ago
I think people just can't imagine getting used to a disability the way we have (and the way *they* would if they needed to). They assume our internal monologue is something like, "I blindly guess it's time for breakfast. Do I still have any bagels left (not that I can see them all that clearly)? I might have to stumble out on an epic journey to the corner store. I'll be so proud of myself once I'm back in my nice, safe, specially modified home."

It really doesn't occur to people that we just go about our lives.

My mom used to yell LOOK to me when I would just reach my arm into the fridge and not actually look inside for whatever it is I was trying to find. Not that me physically turning my head towards the inside of the refrigerator would’ve made a difference.
eddie_the_shit 3 points 2y ago
Yeah - blind eyes usually do look like sighted ones. My mom didn't fully get it until I started using my guide cane (part-time here - some vision on one side). It adds insult to injury when people say things like that.
DrillInstructorJan 1 points 2y ago
This is something I hit quite often. I had sight until I was 19, and that was a long time ago but even now I still basically have the body language of a sighted person and my eyes look completely normal. I'm told I'm quite lucky in that a lot of people get atrophy and stuff, but maybe that's connected with other medical issues. The upside is that especially if I wear sunglasses I can sit at a bar and have a chat with people without them twigging that anything is unusual, but on the other hand, I do constantly get "you don't look blind." I mean okay, I'll take it as a compliment, I guess!
MostlyBlindGamer 13 points 2y ago
I've written quite a bit about this on this sun, but to sum up, you can ask them if they've managed not to soil themselves upon stepping outside. Let them know how proud you are off them, if they were successful.
Crafty_Dragon_roll [OP] 5 points 2y ago
I love this! And I will so use it. I'm new to reddit and this group but am so going to search for your posts because of they're anything like this comment they have to be gold! Thank you!
MostlyBlindGamer 3 points 2y ago
Be my guest! And welcome.
LaurenRossy1 9 points 2y ago
Oh sh\*T, This makes me realize even more how of an idiot I once was when I said you guys were inspirational, you guys shouldnt have to deal with that kind of garbage comment, I am so sorry, Thankfully, people can change their minds, as I did, we are working on changing people minds! <3 Love you guys!!
Crafty_Dragon_roll [OP] 6 points 2y ago
Thank you understanding that we're just normal people like you are. We just can't see. We enjoying the same things everyone else enjoys.
BlindASoccerUSA 3 points 2y ago
I have heard it said once that who are we to decide what someone else deems to be inspirational, right? That’s one side of the coin. The other side means entirely flipping the script and those others have said think about what you would do, and how you would adapt give in similar situations with the same circumstances. I think it’s just ignorance when people say things that they do sometimes. This obviously means on a much larger scale changing the expectations Of cited and able-bodied people. Part of me wishes it wasn’t up to us though and a case by case basis to educate these people.
sewingself 7 points 2y ago
The problem is that what people really mean when they say you're inspiring is "oh, I didn't think you could do that at all" or "oh I never thought a blind person would want to make a ginger bread house" and even if they mean well this is ultimately what it boils down to.
Remy_C 7 points 2y ago
I actually pity the sighted for this a tiny bit. If you rely so much on one sense that people doing the simplest things without that sense inspires you THAT MUCH, that's actually a little bit sad. Though if I'm being honest, I have partial vision, and there really are some totally blind people out there who are very inspiring. So maybe I'm a hypacrit.
Crafty_Dragon_roll [OP] 2 points 2y ago
You're right, that is kinda sad. I hadn't thought of that before.
snappydoggie 6 points 2y ago
I had a dental hygienist asked me who helped me floss my teeth???!!! I guess I was inspirational when I told her I managed that all by myself. WTF?! These people are ridiculous.
Redleadsinker 6 points 2y ago
You probably already know about this but I only recently (in the last four months) listened to Stella Young's amazing Ted Talk about inspiration porn, and I loved it.
Crafty_Dragon_roll [OP] 3 points 2y ago
I loved it too!
guitarandbooks 12 points 2y ago
I was really disappointed actually. I listened to the whole thing and there wasn't any porn at all! I want my money back.
Festygrrl 5 points 2y ago
Oh yeah. I do cross stitch as a hobby to keep me sane. I have a public Insta page to show it - I don’t even mention on my page that I’m (legally) blind cause I don’t want the pity/sympathy/inspiration porn shit from people. I’m no ones inspiration. Honestly, I’m a bit of a cunt.
Crafty_Dragon_roll [OP] 3 points 2y ago
Same. My give a f*ck broke years ago. I'm a baker thats what I've always liked, and I'm pretty good at it imo. I'm no Christine Ha, but I'm not bad. I dont need or want the pity.
4humans 5 points 2y ago
Did you tell them you also used the toilet by yourself and got dressed?
Crafty_Dragon_roll [OP] 4 points 2y ago
Some AH just sent me a chat message after reading my post to tell me that I am an inspiration. I responded with yes I even managed to make my own breakfast this morning. He said I should take the compliment and be greatful.
4humans 4 points 2y ago
Tell him you could use some help determining if your ass is clean after using the toilet.
Crafty_Dragon_roll [OP] 3 points 2y ago
Lol. I'm ignoring him at the moment. His last message said all he had to do was take my cane away and I'd be done.
4humans 2 points 2y ago
What an AH. Not worth the time.
LaurenRossy1 1 points 2y ago
Omg I am laughing on the floor😂😂😂
grinchnight14 1 points 2y ago
I hope that guy didn't have breakfast lol
Winnmark 4 points 2y ago
Use the situation as an educational experience for them, they probably just don't know any better.
thirtyoneorfourtytwo 3 points 2y ago
Yes! Especially when people have a few drinks, i couldn't even begin to describe how sick and tired I am of being such a "brave person with such a unique happy spirited outlook despite my (according to them I guess) horrendous circumstances", fuck me sighters life ain't that hard for me I have a guide dog, a ton of helping aids and (at times) a fully functional brain, so i am super duper happy.

The braveness and inspiration comments are up there with people telling me "But you don't look blind?!" or like when someone asked me if I needed help wiping myself at an outdoor bathroom stall at a festival, I told her to close her eyes and see if she manages to touch herself exactly wherever she wants on her body with no sight, she did and then we both laughed. But atleast people mean well, They really do, it's just so funny.
HealthyChoice1363 3 points 2y ago
Ha ha, take it as a compliment? Or ignore really to be honest, people are like that particularly at times, this is not rocket science really people? Don't know what is inspirational about that

I generally use it as teaching moments and then say if you want amazing and outstanding I wil tell you what’s even more this way then tell them a story about something actually inspiring I do but it often turns in to this is how blind people live etc.... it’s usually helpful and generally interesting I have lots of actualy inspiring things because I am a bit of a character and have some grit and spine and bravery and boldness and such so yeah... usually it’s like that’s not so much but look this is probably more amazing and interesting. And I turn it in to education and a lesson. I get I learnt a lot thanks for that.
