Sunglasses for stargardts disease (self.Blind)
submitted by BigOhNo
I have stargardt's but thankfully for now my vision is not really impacted. I'm looking at everything to slow it down or at least give my eyes a fighting chance to last long enough where there are treatment options (stem cells, gene therapy, pharmaceuticals) .

Anyways, I'm getting myself sunglasses for when I go outside to protect my eyes. I want the most protection possible and I came across: blue-light reflective coating and yellow tinted glasses.

The blue light reflective coating typically is typically a clear coating (like on eye-glasses) that is suppose to reflect blue light. Yellow tinted sunglasses are suppose to filter blue light.

My questions are:

1) Is one better than the other? blue-light coating vs yellow tinted glasses

2) Does yellow tinted glasses still offer complete UV protect in sunlight or is it somehow less effective against UV compared to traditional "dark tinted" glass?

I guess what I'm trying to educate myself on is what kind of sunglasses I should be buying to offer ideal protection for my eyes, specifically protecting my retina from damage

Most of the Low Vision Specialists and eye doctors I know recommend Amber sunglasses for cutting out blue light and making it easier on the eyes.

The glasses themselves can be UV protected and still be clear.

Also, the fitover glasses made of plastic are usually not a coating, but the plastic itself is that colour, so you wouldn't scratch off a coating (but the lenses themselves can still scratch with enough abuse). For example, that colour is solid through the lenses.

You can get UV protection on any kind of lenses - just ask your optician for it.

Yellow tinted lenses are good for increasing contrast. That's why people wear them for target shooting and such.

Either way, regardless of fashion decision, get wrap around glasses to cover your whole field of view.

I would recommend polarized yellow tongues sunglasses the brand doesn’t matter

I was diagnosed in the last year - they're expensive, but I really like the Costa del Mar sunglasses. The green mirror tint really helps with light sensitivity when not in full sun, but all of their tints work for the 580 lens. I also find the glass lens gives better contrast than the polycarbonate lens, but they weigh more.
