What is a problem that the visually impaired encounter that technology would solve? (self.Blind)
submitted by pumpykin_
Hi everyone! Hopefully this is allowed. I'm an computer engineer doing a group capstone project and we're looking at ideas to help the visually impaired.

What is a common problem you encounter that you think technology would solve?

**Edit:** I realize proposing an idea and asking for approval wasn't the best. I'd like to reformat my post to just ask the simple question of "What is a common problem you encounter you think technology could solve?"

I'm saddened that the provision of audio-description hasn't progressed from having it in the public TV mix. I'd like a wearable that allowed me to have content described privately.

Thanks didn't know this was asked frequently. Sorry for those that see these types of posts too often.

Hey. I’m a STEM major and I would really appreciate it if you could make a program that would accurately read LaTex. Listening to math is impossible most times (and if not it’s not an accurate representation of what the equation is showing visually.) when one would write x^{23+6y} should say something like “x raised to the quantity 23 plus 6 y power” instead of “x 6 plus 23 y” it would directly help me in my studies.

Wow I never would have thought of this. I'm actually surprised something doesn't already exist for this. This seems like a problem AI would solve with language processing. Thanks for your input!

There are already white canes with ultrasonic waves sonar - for example UltraCane (2005) such combo than no white cane at all has huge advantages: others are still seeing that you're a blind/low vision white cane user - it's worldwide universal symbol, when battery dies out cane can still be used traditionally and much more accurately than non contact handheld devices solution to white canes like RUB (2007?) - virtual ultrasonic vibration white cane, a glove (2011). Vibrating navigation shoes for blind and VI, a phone case with sonar bulbs in for iPhone - all failed more or less and traditional cane stays as most popular choice still. Such canes with extra add-ons are heavier, harder to repair and that costs more, form factor is chunky, not possible to switch ends myself, costs compared to normal cane is not worth it, not comfortable to use, this novel functionality is not reliable at all.
There's a cane with Google Maps navigate i think it's WeWalk cane? They even partnered last edition with Ambutech i think. It has other inteligent functionality it just not available in my country and i prefer light canes.

Disadvantage of such alternatives of non contact devices:
- not detecting holes in surfaces, curbs
- loss of tactile detail: you don't feel difference between grass, gravel, snow, sand etc yes you feel it with your feet but when you feel it it's often too late to react to change, to potential danger. Real white cane gives you those 2 seconds, like walking in a in a unknown terrain in a forest searching for a swamp you need a stick
- no audio feedback from the surface - some likes it some not so much. You can orientate on sounds bouncing from walls and surfaces when walking with cane. Alternatives even with artificial sound added aren't doing good sounds and you look awkward waving hand like having a cane but not having it.

Those devices aren't so effective no matter how many sensors they have i tried few of them, very frustrating for the user.

For directions i have my smartphone already i pair it with bluetooth earbud or my smartwatch i wouldn't buy another device for things my devices are doing for free already.

Very good points you brought up! Yeah and for these reasons the technology doesn't solve the problem as well as a traditional white cane.
So I'm abandoning that idea, and now just looking at other problems I could solve with technology that there is a need for in the visual impaired community.

Those are cool ideas! I would like an app where I can pick from tons of live people to read me any book I want. If there was a way to scan the book over to them or something and then you can pick different voices since some audio book voices are annoying and "Be My Eyes" is robotic and not universal.

Thanks! I think this idea is really cool and has a lot of potential!
Poolz_Of_Lymph 2 points 2y ago
My idea or yours? Lol

Yours!

Oh ok thanks! That's something I would really enjoy.

I do like this idea of a headmounted camera, seems similar to how some people livestream outside on twitch tv. I think the challenge with this idea, is if there is any sort of image recognition it needs good hardware which is why most solutions that exist use wi-fi to send data to servers to process the images, in order to keep the device small. Another challenge would be battery life of the camera.

Definitely a great idea! Just with some challenges. I appreciate your input!

Using a third party app is possible, depends on whether they have some sort of API available. I don't have too much knowledge about any existing solutions for this however.

yes, it does frustrate me that so much of the things I want to inspect visually require holding a physical phone. A bit of eyewear would be great wouldn't it? In my ideal world, I'd have good pattern matching too so you could easily choose what you want to do: identify a product expiry date, recognise a face, find a specific landmark etc.

Getting the line number of the current bus in front of you if it doesn't have reliable external announcements.

What about accessible point of sale machines like you know you go to the super market and they say okay put in your card. Now put in your pin or do you want to do credit or debit but people with vision can press their own buttons and sign their own name I wish those POS machines were accessible.

Or accessible cashier machines so blind people can be cashiers as well?

I am not blind but my fiance is and we both hate the people who make zoomtext with a burning passion. Everytime word updates it ruins the program and the evil company tries to sell you an update code for $1200 rather than just updating word to work with the new updated windows. I have to disable my windows updates to make it so that they don't ruin her zoomtext program. Would be great if someone could fix that or at least hack their system to send out all of their free codes and crash their business. Would also accept giving them a big internet virus or just leaving a flamming bag of poop outside of their front door, we are not greedy people.
