Not being able to drive always seems to be the root of my problems. (self.Blind)

Same thing I have always felt worst about related to my vision. I hate not being able to just get up and drive somewhere at the spur of the moment and go wherever I want. I depend on family too much and then it usually feels like they are still parenting me and also when you depend on family, they may say where you want to go is dumb or try to discourage it, etc... so it gets annoying.

Yeah, I understand how frustrating that would be. I wish there were better options than there are now.

I guess if I had unlimited money, my situation wouldn't be quite as bad as it is now because I could just constantly use uber and cabs, but as it is I don't want to spend that much often. Plus even in those situations I am uncomfortable. I actually rode a bus to another city a couple times to go to concerts and any cab drivers in those places were rude, so i am nervous most will be.

Now that I think about it, even the bus rude made me anxious because I was worried I'd not find the right place to go to catch the one back home.

I agree. I always get questioned about why I want to go there and for what? I have access a ride which helps a lot but I feel like a burden even though their LITERAL JOB is to help people who blind or visually impaired get from one place to another

At least I am glad my family isn't the only ones who do that. lol. But it gets very frustrating like I need to get their approval for where I go. I really am going to have to just start using some other transportation sometimes, even if it costs pretty much (in some cases).

And also the ones whose job is to take you places really should not be having you feel that way, but that seems to be the norm for most businesses now, where some of the people act like they are doing everyone a favor. I do have an option of transportation that is probably similar to what you are talking about, but I haven't tried it yet.

You should try your mode of transportation, maybe it’ll help you. Don’t get me wrong I appreciate AAR a lot it just feels like that sometimes but I also feel free
dunktheball 2 points 2y ago
Basically I think the one I could use now costs a small amount each eay, which wouldn't be bad to at least occasionally use. I think the company that ahs free service bases theirs on income and me not able to get theirs, but I need to check into it all again and be sure where all they will go. I wish there was one that would also dun late at night, but I guess for that there is just no choice other than typical cabs or uber.

Also the public bus is realllllly low cost for someone with a disability, but since the main city is one of the top crime areas in the country I hate to chance it. I think usually hardly anyone rides it and sometimes literally nobody is on it. lol

Is moving to a city with abundant public transit options a possibility for you now or in the future?
baistei 2 points 2y ago
Very much relate to this. We are trying to move and it's so annoying to me that I have to do tons of research on each potential property just to make sure I am nearby literally anything so I'm not completely helpless. I did move to a city with public transportation many years ago and it has dramatically improved my life. It's not always the best though and I still walk two miles to a store sometimes and people think I'm nuts.

YES! Being on someone else's time sucks. I am legally blind and can't legally drive. Wish I had my own mode of transportation.
XSerenity 2 points 2y ago
Completely agree here. I can see well enough to do most things fine, but not driving. It constrains my choices a lot. I'm able to ride a bike, which helps. Having reliable friends helps too, but I'm still quite restricted. I can't wait to move to a larger city with actual transit.
TheRedColorQueen 2 points 2y ago
In New York we have access a ride which is good. I don’t know where you want to move to but I wish you the best of luck with transportation

Yeah... I feel this. It’s a good thing I want to be a writer so I can just work from home, but living? Forget it. It’s the city or I starve to death. I really don’t want to make the city a permanent home, but it’s that or I have no freedom for the rest of my life. There’s nothing I can do about it

The struggle is real with this one. Think without this problem I'd be in better health both physically and mentally.

Like I'm working on fixing both those things but having a car would likely have kept me from ever ending up needing to do this anyways.

Lots of people don’t drive for a variety of reasons. Does your not city have public transit?

Same. I’ve always felt really incomplete like I feel bad people have to drive me around all the time. I feel like they’ll get sick of me

I feel this .... But I don't want to ignore that you may not try a mode of transportation because of your boyfriend's opinion? Don't rule out options because of someone not wanting them for you ... If you feel it is viable, do it, get it, try it. We have to adjust the best we can and that means being open yo alternatives that other people may not be able to wrap their heads around.

Yes, and he probably likes the fact that you are reliant on him. Go do you.

There has to be some power given to you though ... It's awesome that he worries but there is also the reality that blind doesn't mean incapab of being situationally aware. Gaining some kind of autonomy in planning your own day, even if it is just being able to grocery shop on your own is important.

As I lost the ability to drive I noticed some people's overbearance on my life and their worry for my safety kept me from personal achievement. The worse my vision gets the more important it is that people around me realize that I am still me and the human I am needs autonomy. I appreciate their worry, but they need to appreciate capabilities and need for independence.

Best of wishes to you
