Do any of you have/use 14-cell braille displays? Are they practical? (self.Blind)
submitted by ColonelKepler
Hi all,

Basically the title. I'm considering purchasing the Brailliant BI14, because my current braille display (40 cells) is 12" and I'd like something smaller to carry around, especially if I just have my phone (I have pretty bad hearing loss so sometimes I prefer not to use audio). If you have one, is it worth the money? 14 cells is extremely small and I'm not sure I could get used to it, but a tiny display like that seems really tempting. The device also appears to run Linux, so will probably be easy to tinker with.

I could only afford a Focus 14 some years back and really got quite used to it. I would go up to something longer for being sat comfortably and reading for pleasure.

My wife uses a smart beetle. She loves it, and has no issues with the small display. However she has very small hands and likes using the smallest devices possible.

She does use her Polaris (32 cell) for reading books though, and an 80 cell for work. So maybe not great as your only device if you can avoid it.

I think small displays has their own advantage. I have an orbit and like it but anything smaller seems workable too.

I’ve always loved the sound of a smart beetle. However, I have the 16 cell display from hymns. Not sure of the spelling of it though. I find it very easy to use with my phone when out and about. Hope this helps.

Hey friend. Check out the Orbit. Small display and way way cheaper than humanware

Oh yeah, I'm aware. I hear the Orbit Reader is very loud and slower to refresh, which would be really annoying. Thanks for the suggestion though!
