How do blind people differenciate between one dotted letters or numbers? (self.Blind)
submitted by Not_Like_Equals_Gay
Hey
I just saw this video:
$1
and at 0:45, he opens the brail watch, and he feels around it.
But how would he know the difference on them, and if it was one big flat plate, and just a dot which meant 2, how would he know it is not a 1?
Because I believe that 1 and 2 are close to each other. 1 is the top left dot, and 2 is the left middle dot.
So how would they know if it is a 1 or a 2?
Thanks a lot
I know this might be poorly formulated, but english is not my first language, and I kinda got stuck trying to figure out a good way to explain it, and just went with it.

Tommy can tell because it's a clock and the numbers don't move, only the hands.

Basically the same way a sighted person can tell the time on a wall clock with no numbers or marks at all.

But how can people tell it if it was like an elevator, and there was just one dot, how could they differentiate between a 1 and a 2?

His watch isn't using braille numbers due to the fact it's a watch. Elevators use actual braille numbers, where 1 and 2 are different.

yes: the watch uses dots in fixed positions to indicate time. a dot at the very top indicates 12. the one next to it 1:00, or 5 after the hour, depending on the hand. In most watches I've seen the quarters are tactily different.

it is true that in actual braille you do come across dots by themselves. ⠁ is the letter a, and ⠄ is usually an apostrophe.
these tend to appear in context though - so a word like "Maria's" ⠠⠍⠜⠊⠁⠄⠎ has the a and ' next together but you can feel the difference in height quite readily.
Similarly, in braille ⠈⠇ is the £ sign, but ⠐⠇ is the word lord.
You can easily feel the placement of that first dot in relation to the 3 next to it.
And of course with currency you expect numbers next - people rarely talk about more than one lord at a time. ...

hope that makes sense. :)

It’s a system of dot combos and counting. But the video should explain that haha! Most are 1 dot and it’s like akin to simple counting the 3 6 9 and 12 have a bit different markings.
