Running out of glaucoma drops (self.Blind)

I'd run to an ER if I were you. Take your precious prescriptions and any records you have.

If you're skipping doses you might already have elevated pressure at certain times.

Do you feel any pain? Headaches maybe? Do you know how to check the pressure by massaging with your fingertips? (Don't try it if you haven't been taught how by a doctor.)

Also consider taking your old prescriptions to a pharmacy. They might be willing to help you out. It's not like people are getting high off of Timolol.

Thank you everyone for the advice. I’m going to call my old doctor as recommended here, he’s from out of state so my insurance won’t cover it. I’m going to try to scrounge up some money and borrow from a friend to cover a month or two of drops.

This should work!

Thank you for the tips! I feel fine. Sometimes my pressure is higher though, I can tell by feeling it.

I can try asking the pharmacy, but I don’t have money for the prescription. My insurance requires the primary doctor referral hence the slow down.

The emergency room can’t help with the eyedrops, they will only give me Diamox, which I have access to already so I might start going back to that

Gotcha.

Make sure you take the pills with food.

As far as "home remedy" type advice, don't drink too much water or other fluids in one go, don't bend over, don't hold your breath. If you don't play wind instruments, this is not the time to start.

All the research I've done on PubMed haa led me to conclude two things: you should try for a generally healthy lifestyle and they're isn't too much actionable research around this.

About your blind eye, high IOP can eventually damage your cornea leading to pain and discomfort. Worst case scenario, in the long run you could end up needing a cornea transplant and you wouldn't want to use up a donor on a non functional eye. I'm not saying any of that is going to happen, but you should still consider the health of that eye, even if it doesn't work. Which reminds me I should go hydrate mine.

Thank you so much for all of these tips. Will do. And I’ll keep that in consideration about the blind eye for sure. Was wondering about that actually.

No problem. Good luck.

Have you contacted your former doctor to see if they can assist? Perhaps see if you could get a script via urgent care center to tide you over? If you have disabilities services from work or school or the state see if they can help?

Also, depending on what state you are in Marijuana can be used to lower eye pressure. Good luck!

I’m sure my old doctor would be willing, it’s just a matter of paying for it. My insurance won’t cover it for the out-of-state doctor. I’ll continue working on trying to come up with the money for this.

And yes marijuana is legal here! Unfortunately I live with my grandfather right now due to Covid, and he is very anti-drugs. Wont allow it

Could you ask your old doctor if he could send you some samples by express post? You could send him a transfer to cover the cost of the shipping. It might get you through a few weeks.

One thing to think about regarding cannabis, smoking it does work but you don’t maintain stable levels because it doesn’t really linger in your system that long. If you could find a source for edibles you can microdose for your glaucoma, that way you maintain the right levels and get your pressures down. I have higher than normal intraocular pressure, it’s just an eye structure thing as opposed to glaucoma. However I’ve been taking cannabis for sleep and arthritis and since 2013 and my high intraocular pressure is now normal and my normal blood pressure is low normal. I take one edible a day at bedtime. About 35 mg. You could microdose several times a day so that it does not impact your sobriety.

Thank you so much for the advice! I may try this with the doctor. Friend offered to lend me some money so I might be able to pay out-of-pocket for a prescription or two.

Any kind of marijuana or edibles is definitely out of the question. If my grandpa finds it in the house I might be homeless. But will keep working on getting some eyedrops one way or another. And will keep in mind your information about edibles for later when we are no longer living with my grandpa.

This is just an informational thing. My partner has severe glaucoma and his pressure was difficult to manage so his surgeon did a procedure where they put a tiny hole in his eyeball to release pressure. It sounds gross and he said the first couple of days were annoying because the contact lens they put in to protect things was bugging him but once it healed no issues and I think he’s three years in now and still doesn’t need eyedrops. I know the drops are prohibitively expensive so it might be a viable solution for some folks, even if there is some cost to the surgery [US].
