Games for friend after eye surgery (self.Blind)
submitted by stayupgrinding
Hey all, hope this is an appropriate forum for this question, but thought this community might have ideas.

My friend’s dad is having eye surgery next week, and won’t be able to see much for a few weeks.

Was hoping for suggestions for board or card or etc style games they could play in this scenario. They love games, and are looking for ideas to keep his spirit up during recovery.

I tried googling, but what I found were games that have been adapted for people who are blind, but he doesn’t read Braille and isn’t necessarily adept at those kinds of things given the temporary nature of his visual deficit.

Thanks in advance!

The BBC makes a lot of radio plays available online. I like listening to them on my bad vision days.

And don't discount the benefits of playing these games in places other than his house (as he's able, of course, and...you know...Covid measures). After the vitrectomy in my good eye I realized that, even though I couldn't really see where I was, I missed the other sensations of going places and really pushed myself to go out.

Times like this out a person at increased risk of becoming a career couch potato (like I was for a while). Going for a drive now and then, or even an accompanied walk around the block can be a very important thing.

I'd definitely second the getting out and doing stuff thing. Honestly unless he's medically unable it sounds like a good time to hit the gym!

Absolutely. My gym actually hooked me up with a free-of-chsrge trainer while my vision was returning (mostly to reduce the liability on their part, but still).

Tell him to ask the surgeon before working out, though. Exertion-induced spikes in blood pressure can be catastrophic if they happen too soon after eye surgery.

Thanks for the suggestion! I think because of the nature of the surgery, he's not allowed to be too active - he's not even supposed to walk much beyond a trip to the kitchen and back.

Lots of
"would you rather" ,
audio books,
30seconds, it's kind of a spoken charades. Then there is another game called 5 things or something? You have to name 5 things from 1 topic in 30 seconds! You don't need to buy anything these types of games can be DIY'd

Great suggestions, thank you!

Drinking games? Everytime in a film or live event you heard a word take a shot. Trivial pursuit in teams, so he has a "reader" for him

Maybe something like Jenga? You don’t have to see to play that one. You just have to be very, very careful feeling the tower. Or headbands. All he needs is for someone to tell him the object quietly and he can participate

Or Simon Says.

Dominos, Mancala if you incorporate different types of rocks, any face card with raised/embossed designs.

I name those as most of them can be identified by feel even for people who rely primarily on sight—would not require the teaching of difference to understand like Braille would.

What about stuff like trivia, anagrams, unscramble the word etc....?

$1 is a website and podcast dedicated to blind board gaming. This is more geared to those who know braille however.

Also /r/boardgames is a great resource for finding games. I might suggest co-operative games where there is little to no hidden information. The players are playing against the game instead of each other. That way you can describe the state of the board so he can take his turn. Pandemic is a classic in the genre and is certainly appropriate for the world today.
