Does anyone have advice to give on dealing with night blindness? (self.Blind)
submitted by Bhulagoon
Does anyone have any tips on how to deal with nighblindess inside my home? I don't drive due to not being able to see well enough to even day drive drive, let alone nighttime so that's not much of an issue. But my issue really takes toll on me when I can't do anything productive past 3pm (depending on the season)

I do have lights in my home that I set to "daylight" and that helps a little but it is still not enough do do any sort of writing/crochet/crafts that I'd like to do. I've only just recently discovered that I have nightblindness (i thought I was normal) so I'm sorry if this question is asked a lot or is common knowlage

Any advice you have is greatly appreciated! Thanks 😄

I have desk lamps around the house because of this issue. I also have magnifiers with built in lights. I'm not sure this will help you personally, but it helps me.

I love my headlamp, the light is always exactly where I want it to be. Maybe that would be something for you?
There's also the option to try to rely more on touch. I'm currentlz trying to crochet more tactile than vuisyually as that would also allow me to rest my eyes. And writing on a computer does not require light at all.
But as I'm not sure how much you still see I don't know if any of that is usefull.

A headlamp is not a bad idea haha. For the most part I use tactile crochet when im doing more simple projects. Lace and dark yarns is my main issue because I really have to see what I'm doing for those

Writing more so I mean manual, so not on a computer but as others have suggested brighter bulbs and more lamps should help

Definitely more small/direct lights has been helpful for me in addition to diffuse light and painting the walls bright colors or shades. Under counter lights in the kitchen, lights inside closets, task lights on an arm for finer work. Keeping clear paths in the house so you don't stumble into things is also important.

"Daylight" in lights is a temperature/spectrum and not a brightness. Sounds like you need either more or brighter lights. It might be a little counter-productive but I point lamps with bright bulbs straight at the ceiling to diffuse the light more and prevent the loss of contrast I associate with having lights within my line of sight.

I'm definitely going to try pointing my lights up and see if that helps! I didn't know daylight had to do with temperature and not brightness though so that is a really helpful point, I always thought I made me see better lol

I don’t seem to have true night blindness, but I struggle a lot at night and rarely drive at night anymore for the same reason.

I also try to keep accessible lights around the house and usually take my phone with me for the flashlight.

I’m blind but do not deal with night blindness and I have a random thing to say. I’ve found that knitting is a much easier tactile craft than crocheting. The stitches on the needles make it easier to count and keep track of. Obligatory I’ve knit for 9 years and tried crocheting five or so times in that length.

Very helpful! Though I think we are the opposite lol I crochet way more than I knit and can do it mostly by feel. Though I can definitely see what you mean with knitting being easier tactile wise bc when I knit I can kit one needle off the other to find a stich if I can't exactly see it where as crochet I use my fingers to find it. I just need more practice with knitting I suppose! Thank you!

Thank you!! I should practice crocheting more, too.

Idk how blind or if this will help you in preticular but they do make crochet hooks that illuminate light. So if you see some light this may help you get into it by letting you know where your hook is and if you caught the correct stitch or not! Good luck

I'm sure blind folk would be a lot better at finding stitches with fluffy yarn bc we don't rely on seeing them. (Its nearly impossible to see stitches with fluffy yarn) Basically a super power imo 😂
