New member, just want to introduce myself. (self.Blind)
submitted by CMM41329
Hi everyone!

I’m legally blind with about 20/800 vision. I’m a sophomore in university and a math major with a computer science minor. I’m planning on going to graduate school. Just wanted to give a quick introduction, hoping to meet some other blind redditors!

Hello! It’s nice to meet you! I am not blind myself, but rather I joined this community to learn more about how the blind community communicates online. Nice to meet you!

Hi there. I am fully blind and studied CS back in the day. These days though, I'm in the civil service doing boring bureaucracy stuff, but I still do some maths for fun, with Coq and such.

woah that's really nice. Real mathematicians rarely use that.

That’s really cool you studied CS! Which programming languages do you know?
modulus 1 points 2y ago
C and Python are the ones I'm most familiar with, though I also know some Java (very out of date), C++, ocaml, lisp, ruby... Lately though I've been getting a lot into Rust. I really like it. But that said I haven't done any serious programming in quite a while, I mostly fiddle around. I did quite a bit of Advent of Code this December, to improve my Rust.

But Coq is really interesting stuff. It can be used for programming but it's more of a proof assistant.

This is cool.
How do you feel about indentation?
modulus 2 points 2y ago
Indentation is sort of annoying to do, especially since I have difficulties using an IDE because screen reader support tends to be meh. So I am forced to do it manually. That said, one of the things I like about some languages is autoindentation tools. With Rust, for example, I run cargo fmt and the entire project gets indented in the canonical style.

That said, indentation can be very useful. Screen readers can announce it through a tone, making going down through blocks much faster, and if one is using a braille display it's very easy to get a sense of the overall structure of the code.

Hello, great to meet a VI person in the sciences! My daughter will be heading down this route :)
CMM41329 [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Fantastic, is she in college?
niamhweking 2 points 2y ago
Not yet, she's 9 and is only into physics, maths and programming! Since she was a toddler, maths has been her thing, she doesn't get it from me, that's for sure
CMM41329 [OP] 4 points 2y ago
As a math major, I have lots of suggestions for accessible ways to do math, let me know if you ever need help!

Hi! I’m a VI physics student! It’s so awesome to learn about other blind STEM people.
CMM41329 [OP] 1 points 2y ago
That’s fantastic, mind if I message you? I’d love to get to know other blind people in STEM!

What's your CS specialization?
bradley22 2 points 2y ago
Hi :)
divgirlarb 1 points 2y ago
Hey there, Nice to know you :)

I'm a VI recent CS graduate.

Nice to meet you. I am a totally blind currently political science student but thinking of changing over to assistive tech we’ll see. Still trying to figure it out.
CosmicBunny97 1 points 2y ago
Heya, nice to meet you. :) What you’re studying sounds really interesting even though I suck at math :P
BexTheMixer 1 points 2y ago
Nice to meet you! I'm blind as well. I have light perception but that's it. I'm currently in my first year of college getting some general eds done. I'm new to this sub as well.

Hey! I have a complex visual disability thats difficult to explain. I’m a freshman at university studying social science. It’s nice to meet you!

Welcome!

I'm not blind myself, but follow this sub to learn more. Congrats on your studies, and good luck!
