Request Participants for a Study (self.Blind)
submitted by InterestingAd515
Hello. Good afternoon.

I am a graduate student, and the focus of my research is to develop a smart cane that can assist people who are blind or visually impaired with their daily mobility needs.

I am thinking of conducting a study with participants who use or have used commercial smart canes like the WeWalk and UltraCane. I would like their feedback on how effective these commercial smart canes were. This would involve online surveys and/or interviews, and compensation.

At this stage, I am trying to understand how many individuals use or have used commercial canes like the WeWalk, UltraCane or other commercial canes to see how feasible my study will be.

If you are interested in participating in this study, please provide your name and email address. I contact you further regarding the study details.

If you have any questions, let me know. I can be reached at jsp3721@g.rit.edu. I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you.

Glad to see I am in the majority and chorus I don’t find them useful either and don’t want it myself don’t think they are good. Interesting and fascinating on paper not so good pragmatically.

Will save you time and trouble by just saying that the vast majority of blind people don't want "smart" canes. They are expensive, are not weatherproofed, we are already carrying phones and other technology that already performs the tasks a smart cane tries to do, and canes are meant to hit things and can break/gaet run over/stepped on, etc.

Strongly recommend you focus your efforts on another need and drop this project idea.

Why do this when canes like the wewalk already exist? What will make your cane stand out?

I'm not part of your target group, but I'd like to mention I've worked with people from RIT before and it was a positive experience.

Good luck.
