Preferences for physical description in alt text (self.Blind)
submitted by Designforlearning
Hi! In learning design, best practice is to use diverse images to promote inclusivity and make people feel welcome. I’m about to train people on using alt text. I’m not sure what to say about noting the race or physical characteristics of the person in the image.

I appreciate any help you can give me. I want to do this right. I could only find one article when I searched.

I don’t care. As long as I get what I need to out of the image, colour and things like that don’t bother me.

I just had to do this yesterday for work. Describing my own photo I said "Mike, a 50ish white male with facial birthmark and wearing glasses, stands smiling in front of a blue Apple WWDC 1990 Banner".

I included both race, sex, age and in my case, notable distinguishing features, a facial birthmark and glasses in describing myself. If I were describing someone else I might be more circumspect for fear of offending the person I was describing.

That’s really helpful! Yes, I don’t want to offend anyone. I do want to show inclusivity though
