How is Discord for y'all? (self.Blind)
submitted by BexTheMixer
I have a Discord account, and there are subs I like who post their Discord servers. I subscribe to them but I have never used Discord, still unsure if I should. I tried it once but it was really terrible. This was before they supposedly updated it. A blind friend of mine strongly recommends I use it but she's super independant and able to figure things out, not that I'm not, I just get frustrated when apps aren't really accessible. So, how is Discord as of now? What are your oppinions on it as VI/blind people? How accessible is it? Is it worth trying out? Is it easy to figure out? Are there any huge issues?

I’m totally blind and I use the IOS app, it used to not be very accessible, but with the new update, its very easy to navigate.

Oh this is really really good to hear because I want to join in some servers so yeah.

The desktop app definitely has its annoyances but the iOS app is much more accessible. The android app is too as far as I know, but I haven’t had an android phone in years so I don’t know if anything has changed since then. The iOS app used to be really shitty in terms of accessibility but now it’s so much better. Pretty much everything is labeled and easy to navigate. I would urge you to give it another go; I’m totally down to help you again, being that blind friend who you mentioned in the post :-)

It's... okay. Desktop navigation on Windows and the web client are decent. The android app is quite competent. The iOS app is rough but useable. All of them are full of little holes and bugs. Last I checked, the Mac OS app was straight up broken with no plans to fix it. Frankly, I'm surprised they've added any accessibility at all.

Navigating can be challenging using a screenreader, but it's not impossible, just clunky

I'd say the accessibility is 90% there as a standard user, either with NVDA or JAWS with the scripts from dlee.org

For VI server owners, things are worse.

There are annoyances and word of mouth tricks to make certain things easier, but just getting on and talking first thing is quite simple.

Works really well

I'm not blind but you will probably like it, it's nice and the TTS works well
xteriic 3 points 2y ago
TTS is definitely not the issue, it's the voiceover navigation that is very bad due to how the app (including desktop) is structured.

Never thought about that...
