I hope this is okay. I don’t know where or who to ask this. I tried researching but only found a few articles.
Hi 🙋🏼♀️ I am writing a FanFiction story for the Harry Potter franchise with the Dramione pairing of one their children.
Anyways I am writing to ask if it is possible for a person who is blind to learn jiu jitsu? In your opinion and a teacher point of view. Would it be something similar to as DareDevil with Murdock learning the positions and such with echolocation and abilities Murdock has.
Would you say they would learn using with the white stick and without it? Along with having a service dog.
My character is blind since birth and is one of a triplets that has a disability. While the other two has no disability whatsoever. I’m thinking and hoping it’s possible for her to learn self defense and maybe the sensi realizes she potential in learning more. Teaches her overall the sport, her surroundings, self esteem and confidence.
In which brings back my question would you think it’s possible to teach a blind person and a blind person to learn jiu jitsu? What martial arts would you learn? I only chose jiu jitsu as it was the first one I thought of.
Thank you ☺️

I remember reading an article about a totally blind man who's a black belt in Aikido. It's similar to Judo in a lot of ways with grappling and using your opponent's momentum to throw them around. It's not competitive and it's more about self defense.
Daredevil is a superhero, so you're not going to find any research on super human abilities like his.
By the way, you mean "white cane."

I don’t know what they are called but I assumed it’s called white cane. The cane they use to help them with their surroundings. Idk what the correct term. I got white cane or walking stick. I apologize if I offended.
Edit: I figured I wouldn’t be able to find similar abilities. But in my story I am trying to find my character to be a brilliant child. Due to her being a daughter of Hermione. I’m trying to find a way where it seemed realistic and fictional. I just don’t know yet.
I’m still on a draft of the story nothing concrete yet. I just want to be able to get all my research done and perspectives in all around then write it off. Cause at the moment I don’t really know where I want to go with the story. Except for the fact Hermione has a set of triplets and one of them is blind. One girl (disability) and two boys with normal vision. They learn ball room dancing, mixed martial arts, instrument/etiquette classes. (All done in muggle/regular world.)

Hey friend. Just as a thought. You should know that most blind people are not profoundly blind and have some vision. Which may help out with your character writing. But also in HP Mad eye moody legit walks around with a magic eye. So. Are there blind and deaf wizards? Just a thought 😆

Oo good point on Moody. But sadly I’m not sure. I’m writing where Hermione leaves the magical world and relocated to live in the muggle world. She raises the children in muggle world. She has them learn a mixed martial arts, etiquette classes, and ball room dancing. The children don’t know they are magical till they are older. Though I am not sure where I am going with story nothing is concrete as it’s still a draft. I’m getting all my research done first before I decide on where to go.
As right now I just know Hermione has given birth to a set of triplets. A girl and three boys the girl has a disability (blind). She raises them on her own along with a help of specialist. They learn mixed martial arts, instrument/etiquette class, and ball room dancing. All done in the muggle/reality world.
I am still debating if she should have a service dog or not to assist her.

Depending on where she is there is an age requirement for service dogs for the blind. So you may want to look into that. Are you aiming for no light perception blindness? She could learn martial arts they would just spend time helping her place body parts on the right places. I once had to teach one of my students a dance for a performance. We ended up being nosy on body so she could feel where parts moved at the correct times. There is also self defense for individuals who are blind that can be taught.

Oh boy. No I didn’t think about that on service dog. I did a small research on it where it was expensive and such to purchase or given one. But I didn’t really delved into it yet.
I’m not sure on the perception yet. I didn’t think that ahead yet until you brought it up. I may rewrite my background first before I take a step ahead. Is there a difference between legally blind then perception?
I feel I need to take a step back and come back to inquiry with you all. I’ll put more in depth on where I am going with my story so it’s understandable of where I’m going with the story. I do apologize for the inconvenience.

Yes! There is a difference between legally blind and profoundly blind or no light perception. Look into a condition called retinitis pigmintosa. There are a lot of kids who struggle with this and may help with your writing of your character

I don’t see why not
And it would be impractical to fight with a. Cane and probably against all sorts of rules why don’t you just introduce that stick that uncle vernon had then hahaha!

My partner is deafblind. He has no vision at all, and he has been doing jujitsu for years. Learning with a white cane would be impractical, and his guide dog sits patiently off to the side while he is rolling. Hope this helps.

I've done martial arts for years and am in the process of losing my vision. I am changing my current training to focus more on Wing Chun, which was designed to be used in close quarters/defending in hallways etc. If you have seen any of the Ip Man movies you have seen Wing Chun. My logic is that if I can't see what I want to be able to do is defend myself if someone is right next to me. I'm also going to do more work with Kali stick fighting, which would keep someone from getting too close to you...and when I need a cane I will always have a stick handy. As a side note, Judo is the martial art used for blind Paralympic athletes.
