Reading glasses or magnifier? (self.Blind)
submitted by BlindWizard
I had a question for the community. I have one Eye left. It has some usable vision but I am still legally blind. I prefer not to use prescription glasses because they give me headaches And I am much more comfortable with my cane. I can still read my phone about an inch from my face and large text on high contrast. My question is would getting a pair of reading glasses or a Magnifier help with reading books? I don’t mind having a book or my phone close to my face but would it help with eyestrain? Any prescription glasses they have ever given me I’m not able to use to read with because it puts the field of vision at arms length and then the text is too small. Any advice or help is greatly appreciated.

I feel like I'm reading about my own situation. I have MS and my right has central damage to the optic nerve. I already had crap vision (im super near sighted) I read my phone two inches from my nose and my right eye closed.

Your eye doctor can adjust the distance that he's correcting for. If you say "hey I need correction that helps me read 10 inches from my nose' they should be able to do that. Usually they measure for two/four feet away. Closer means that they will adjust the strength the the rx so that when you hold your book 5/10 inches from your nose , you can see it more comfortably.

I went ahead and bought some magnifying craft glasses to see if they help they were cheap so if they’re crap I can just return them LOL. I am Waiting to go get corrective lenses again until I have my prosthesis for my missing left eye. Even when I had glasses I would only use them on occasion because I am more comfortable with my cane and it saves having to explain things.

Craft glasses? Could you elaborate?

Magnifying glasses that you can usually put more than one lens in used for small work like art jewelry or watch repair.

My daughter recently got a echenbach block magnifier and it's been a game changer

I have ROP and I work in the disability and mental health fields. Personally, I use a combination of prescription glasses, no glasses, a magnifier, and +5 reading glasses. For the purposes of reading a book, I typically just use my reading glasses and don’t have any issues.

However, my job requires a great deal of graph work, so for that I’ll use a magnification lamp.

Are reading glasses just basically magnifiers?

Wow this is me exactly. I find that prescription glasses do basically nothing for me. They only enlarge the already large text lol. My magnifier is my best friend. I don’t think I could survive without it. But I do have to say that reading print strains my eyes far more than reading a screen, and books are very hard because I have to lean all over them to read it, which casts a shadow on the pages which makes things really hard. Also, because I’m so close to the magnifier, I sometimes fog it up with my breath. But otherwise, I highly recommend you get one.

The struggle is real. I ordered two magnifying necklaces to see how they do as well.

Nice! I have a semi globe thing. It’s rather large and pretty strong because I am a bat lol

Being a legally blind one eyed wizard I wanted to get some tools befitting my station.
