Hello guys! I am currently going to school to become a teacher for the blind and visually impaired (TVI) . I was wondering if there is any skill that your TVI did not teach you that you wish you were taught. Additionally, any skill that you feel should be part of the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC).(self.Blind)

Definitely every day tasks like cooking and some personal finances like writing checks etc

Thank you so much for your response, I Agree ! Personal finance is not taught enough to visual impaired students or sighted students ! We can’t put all of our concentration on things like finding the area of a trapezoid ! We need to learn how to write checks and buy homes.. the education system annoys me something

1. Prioritize Braille skills even when your students go up to higher grade levels. As reading and homework assignments become more intense,, it is easy to become overly reliant on screen readers. 2. If a low vision student has to sacrifice ergonomics in exchange for pain and eye strain, teach the student Braille. 3. Help your students become comfortable with using the Braille slate and stylus for both language and math. I am in college, and the idea of carrying around a Perkins Brailler all day is not favorable. Thankfully, I was able to avoid that by taking statistics. Of course, technology can fail, so a low tech option is essential. I learned the very basics of a Brailleslate and stylus, but it wasn’t emphasized as much as I would hope looking back. 4. Put a high emphasis on independence skills like cooking. 5. Blindness impacts life logistically and socially, so being a good mentor is important. 6. Help your students meet other successful blind people. 7. Teach your student how to advocate for themselves. 8. Encourage your students to take at least one drama class in school. It helped me come out of my shell and feel comfortable in my own skin. 9.
There is a shortage of VI teachers, so thank you for helping the next generation of blind people.

This was beyond helpful you have no idea! I copy and pasted it into my google drive notes. These are some great skills and what you said further emphasizes what I have learned in college . I actually wrote a paper about how drama teaches so many important skill, I am so happy it helped you. Thank you so much

Advocacy and assertiveness I am good at this but seen people struggle if only how to negotiate and advocate and speak up for yourself was taught it would be great. To advocate at home and stuff like that. With teachers.
Also social skills. Social normative behaviors this is how to have a conversation and this is what is appropriate and inappropriate to do I learnt this the hard way by seeing other people sort of a weird modeling thing so I got good. Extrovert but never knew how to direct all of it. Modeling social skills.

Also, thank you for becoming a TVI, and most importantly for asking this question. Your students will be lucky to have you!

Not really a skill per sa, but if the student that you are working with has additional disabilities , make sure you keep them in mind. For example, don‘t try to make a deafblind kid listen to audiobooks. It sounds obvious, but it can get complex at times.
Also, if your kid is recently blind, try to give them enough time to sort of wrap there head around being blind, and don’t force them to do things they don’t want to do.

Thank you for tour response! I feel like many teachers of the blind overlook additional disabilities because they are hyper focused on the eye condition and visual impairment

Teaching advocacy and social skills is so important for independence and career development ! I will definitely learn how to properly model social skills for my students

I wasn't taught how to read math symbols until high school, and I still can't read a map

That's the fault of your TVI then. That's definitely part of the ECC, learning Nemeth code and such.
uakitsdanielle1 points2y ago
High School is very late to teach Nemeth code, and I agree with jade_princess2005. The TVI could have introduced Nemeth earlier. Thank you so much for sharing, your reply is very helpful!
