Visual Impairment Frustration (self.Blind)

I have been visually impaired my entire life, and, now that I'm 16, it's really starting to get frustrating. Driving is difficult, my hobbies are a bore with how much I can't see, and glasses only seem to make it worse.

I feel defeated in my impairment. How would one deal with these frustrations? Drawing, playing video games, doing sports is kind of hard when I can barely see anything. It's frustrating for my family too, since I'm always having to get up close and personal with things to understand them.

I feel the same way you do. My whole life. I’ve always been visually impaired. I’m
Now 32 and unable to drive a car. Its tough. I have an 11 year old and was a single mom for a few years. It’s VERY limiting, VERY frustrating but there are positives. This is hard for me to even grasp most of the time. I’m glad I don’t have to deal with car insurance, bills, repairs or gas.
If you want to talk, I’d be happy to.

Never be ashamed that you need to get up close and personal to understand things. That is who you are, and you've got to embrace it. The sooner you honor that part of yourself, the better. You have a slightly different perspective of the world and the world needs that. Don't ever be ashamed.

You need to find hobbies that you can do with a visual impairment. There are a few blind people who play video games, and there are many blind people who do sports, but you'll need to find a hobby to replace drawing. There are also many other hobbies that you can pursue—search the subreddit and you'll find many suggestions.

I don't think you need to replace drawing, OP. I'm legally blind and really enjoy drawing. I'm not great but the sensation is calming. Having a drawing lamp and a magnifier can help. I also love drawing and painting BIG. If you enjoy digital art you can always magnify any part of your drawing to get it just right. My style has definitely changed as my eyesight gets worse, but please don't talk yourself out of doing things you enjoy if you only need to accommodate yourself.

its all about understanding that this is how you interact with and perceive the world. i didnt lose most of my vision until 23, and was endlessly frustrated i couldnt read normally or would never be able to drive. otherwise, life goes on. i cant bother to be embarrassed anymore, like looking way too closely at something at the grocery store. screw it, i got bad eyes, go ahead and judge.

you may not be able to do everything, but no one can. maybe play games by sitting much closer to a bigger screen. draw using a magnifier to zoom in on your work. also i second getting new hobbies that bring less frustration. theres always still joy to be found somewhere.

Greetings.

I've been blind almost since I was born, so I don't know if I can understand how you feel.

With regard to the car in the country where I live, you have to be from a very wealthy family to have your own car without working and pay for it yourself, and you have to wait until you are 18 years old, so with respect to that can't help you.

However, there are many sports that you can do without see. If you like martial arts, you have judo and Brazilian jiu jitsu (I practice the latter) or if you don't also have capoeira.

More typical sports ... hmm, find out if there is a club or center in your area that offers adapted sports: Football, basketball ...

Video game?

Fighting video games such as dragon ball budokai tenkaichi, teken, mortal combat, marvel vs capcom, skullgirls ... are vastly accessible, you just have to learn to orient yourself through the sounds to know what is happening and memorize the menus. I heard that some blind people play fifa in some way, I can't imagine how.

Sorry I can not help you anymore.

Either find a way to do the hobbies or find some less frustrating ones you enjoy but yeah.... that’s my best advice but sure you can do it. Learn to use public transport it’ll be the best thing you ever learnt you’ll be really independent and can travel well.
