Anyone had positive experiences with the Alexa email interface? (self.Blind)
submitted by So_Wholesome
And have any tips or recommendations? (besides being more patient lol.) My dad is fully blind and I've been trying to get it working for him, but it makes me want to pull my hair out. I haven't had such violent thoughts towards a computer since transitioning to Dectalk PC on Windows 95.

Patience is key here. Seriously though, I’m a student behavior analyst, so I work with Alexa as assistive tech both professionally and personally all the time, so I should be able to help you out.

First of all, do you have accessibility features for visually impairment/blindness turned on? If not, play around with those. I’ll need to check our files, but I think we have a step by step guide/patient handout for setting it up that I can potentially send you that should simplify the process.

That would be amazing!

I've thought more about it, and it seems like navigating the word-count cap is biggest. My dads a big talker, and doesn't always catch when Alexa interrupts him to ask if he wants the email sent. If you have any tips about that, that would be very helpful, but honestly I'll take anything at this point.

You’re welcome! This is the “e-guide” that we give to our patients that we recommend Alexa for as AT (we’re working on our own, but it’s a mess at the moment): https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.tomsguide.com/amp/us/how-to-check-email-alexa,news-28816.html

I’m a writer on the side, so I understand your dad’s plight all too well. Is his issue that he can’t hear Alexa when she speaks (hearing issue) or is it a matter of him going on and on and not catching that she’s asking if he wants the email sent? I want to make sure that I’m covering all bases before giving specific advice.
