Looking for advice for 90 year old mostly blind mother (self.Blind)
submitted by endlessbull
Hey so my mom who lives alone can't see much at all these days. She's gotten to where she needs people to call her because she can't read her phone with huge display to call them.

It's worse than this being 90 she's grew up during the depression so she wont have a smart phone just to get a personal assistant because her phone bill will increase due to internet charges.

I can by her a device for her land line. But it would have to play well with her medical alert box and this spam call blocker that she relies on. Spam block is super important for the elderly.

Anyway I wondered if there was a talking box to make calls for her? The spam blocker already tells her the number/name of who's calling but doesn't help her place calls....

Its becomes even more difficult as I don't live near her. Any advice is welcome...

With the big buttons, could you have a different shape foam sticker on each one or with a hot glue gun dribble the shape of the number on each button? The no 5 should have the raised dot on it, which is for VI people to figure out a key pad. Could a local organisation, guide dogs, and O&m facility, or a charity for the blind help by recommending and even installing for her. It's Irish but could give you some ideas try NCBI website https://www.ncbi.ie/shop/

What about google or alexa? Is that what you mean by personal assistant? Those are very inexpensive especially the minis

another potential is the fact that DTMF tones are just audio in themselves. You could record the sequences for her with accompanying names and get her to lift the telephone receiver and play them into it. something like the $1 would allow you to do this. You'd need to generate the numbers somehow; either by dialling them whilst recording on one of your own phones, or you could doubtless use an online generator somewhere.

No wifi? The Amazon echo connect would link in with her existing landline to make/rcv calls.
