Read online that staring at screen can cause retina detachments and now i kind of live in fear(self.Blind)
submitted by noninitalia
Some context, I have a genetic disorder and am extremely at risk for retina detachments. Like, I’ve had like 20 eye related surgeries, either because of detachments, or as a consequence of an earlier surgery.
I can’t see at all out of my left eye because the retina tissue is basically dead, and I can still see out of my right eye, but I’m AFAK and have no central vision and bunch of blind spots. I still do fine with a cane and don’t use a screenreader or anything. I can’t read print but can read with a Zoom.
Recently I realised I spend 99% of my waking hours in front of a screen. I go to school and study on a screen, I work on a screen, I entertain myself on a screen and I live alone so I socialise exclusively on a screen too. The only things I do without a screen is cook and clean. Out of curiosity I googled what so much screen time can do to your eyes and I read retina detachments which really freaked me out. Did some more googling and apparently it can even be considered a work injury.
Now I’m like, low key high key terrified. I bought the yellow filtered glasses thing but they don’t seem to do anything. I tried the orange filter on my devices but it reduces contrast and makes it hard to see.
I don’t know if this is just a rant or asking for advice or support, but I needed to get that off my chest and I don’t want to freak out my friends or family.

The specific website you linked, I wouldn't trust. however on more genuine sites it does say maybe it can cause it, but there are alot of causes, and yes maybe with your history you might be at a higher risk. But (and I do it myself) stop googling and talk to your optician or ophthalmologist to out your mind at ease, maybe there are regular checks to catch them early

I have never heard of this. I feel like this should be something more widely known... You should check your sources on that

I think you’re honestly worrying too much. Relax and don’t worry about it. This really won’t happen. If it is it’s long term many people do this daily so yeah.....

Now you are scaring me because I have done about nothing OTHER THAN look at screens for decades in a row, whether it be the pc, or tv. Also my cataract could be from it, in my opinion. Supposed experts will claim otherwise, but they also have claimed such things as a cataract wouldn't cause headaches, which is really odd for an expert to claim, since everyone knows any vision problems can cause headaches.

Not fully true, long screen usage is not exclusive cause of retinal detachments or tears even on highly myopic, retinal diseases eyes. Always check sources of such articles, often there none or facts are twisted. The site you linked looks like a fake Quora and answers have no soruces aren't backed up by medical articles or doctors. I too have lots of surgeries due to retina tears and damage i live with retina disease 30 years and have very high risk of retinal tears and detachment in my only right eye because left is fully blind 15 years due to retinal detachment.
Don't fall into blue light mostly fake articles too, most blue light youlr eyes are getting from sunlight actually we need blue light to have normal sleep run and it lls not damaging any eye structures. It mostly affects sleep rhythm after sunset when poor quality screen is used at 100% brightness for hours. But staring at screen is no different than reading a book or looking around that won't damage your retina.
Better watch out for direct injury to the eye and head, blunt hit, sports where you have to hold breath for longer periods of time, avoid weight lifting over 5 kg, avoid positions with head upside down where heart is higher than your head for longer periods of time, no scuba diving, horse jumping. But we're allowed to travel with planes if not recently had any eye surgery and it healed up. It's advisable to swim with big swimming glasses to prevent eye infections those that are not so near the eyes are much more comfortable. Ask your eye doc he/she will ease your fears at best i think it's old common myth since first PC CRT monitors and first TVs that olders were trying to scare younger ones from screens out so they go outside and play.

I would talk to your ophthalmologist about this.

I'm sure these people are being as helpful as they can but if I were you; I'd ask a doctor.
