Instagram is accessible but people don't describe their images Y (self.Blind)

I like the set up for the Instagram app on IOS. Its quite accessible, but sadly the majority have no clue and little interest in describing their images with the alt text.

Because people don’t instinctually think about it because most people don’t know or don’t really have blind people on their minds or life and they think post a picture great. They don’t think oh blind person may come along and see this. Yay! I should describe it. So I can see both sides here. Maybe yu should kindly request they consider this?

When I’ve said I am blind and can’t see your picture can you please describe they usually do it.

Never knew I could describe my photos for the blind. I bet if more people knew about this feature and how to do it then more people would definitely partake in it.

To manually add alt text to your Instagram posts, follow these quick and easy steps: Take a photo or upload an existing photo to Instagram. Edit the image as required, then tap “Next” Select “Advanced Settings” Tap “Write Alt Text” under the “Accessibility” header. Write your alt text in the box and tap “Done”

Because unfortunately, but logically, we don't really matter.

Which means that unless someone is talking to us, or has a reason to know about it because of a job/family member/friend, they obviously aren't going to break up the natural flow of communication for the massive majority, just to meet the needs of a tiny minority, especially on an app like Instagram where almost anyone (rightly) would assume that pretty much no blind people are using it because it's 90% images.

How often do you right up a full transcript for every audio file or video you post to the web that has narration in it?

I actually find Instagram really tough for me. The ability to zoom in on images is glitchy and barely functional.

I know about the alt text option for normal posts, but is there such an option for stories as well?

Is there any way i can make my stories more accessible?
BlueRock956 [OP] 1 points 2y ago
I don't think there is a way to add alt descriptions in stories.
ConstantIncident 1 points 2y ago
I only found the alt text option today on Instagram (after being on there since 2013), and it was hidden under advanced options, something that I've never seen before since the font size and contrast make it completely invisible for me to see. It's good they have the option, but they should have it be unmissable in order to make the experience so much more accessible.
BlueRock956 [OP] 3 points 2y ago
It should not be an advance option, it should be on the main posting page so that people are prompted to add a description.
ConstantIncident 5 points 2y ago
I agree, accessibility should be upfront and not hidden.
BlueRock956 [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Like I mentioned from the Voice Over perspective, the app is actualy quite accessible. It should be easy to change the color contrast of the app, as its a common occomodation feature.

I've struggled to use it in recent years, especially since on my phone, it doesn't accomodate to my chosen font size in the settings (thankfully androids have more accessibility options now than they used to 5 years ago). I did try raising a few of these issues to the support team, but to no avail. We still have a long way to go for full accessibility, but I believe we'll get there eventually.

How do you access alt text??? I have IOS but I can’t ever find them!! I just always put image descriptions at the bottom of the text.

I apologize, I mean to access them via voice over. Do the alt texts read allowed when you have the VO cursor on the image?
BlueRock956 [OP] 1 points 2y ago
As I swipe through inaccessible posts, I find posts like this one, which has an alt description. I'll coppy and paste what VO says:

It’s under “advanced settings” when you are writing the comments.

You can also edit posts to add the alt text later - it shows “edit alt text” in the bottom right corner of the photo

Yeah 🙁I have a few friends that do it for me and I am so grateful ! But for the most partI would love to see what people are up to on Instagram and I would also love to be able to know what the posts that my friends/family send me are about but people never describe their photos. Sometimes they just say "don't worry about it" because they don't want to describe it for me if I ask. I don't really know why they bother sending it to me then 🤷🏻‍♀️
