List of titles with audio descriptions on Disney+ Star in Canada (self.Blind)
submitted by Fireteddy21
Hey everyone, I am a blind user of Disney+ and was hoping to get some help with an initiative I’m looking to put forth. Essentially, with the normal Disney+ service right now, if I want to find out which titles have audio descriptions for the blind, I have to rely on an unofficial list put together by the American Federation of the Blind. It’s updated buy them weekly and a good amount of effort goes into it. Since I live in Canada however, I’m worried that a similar List won’t be available when Disney+ Star launches here since… Well, it’s not in the United States.

I have my own website with a domain name and I would like to host a list of those titles on there when the service launches towards the end of the month. I was wondering if anyone would be interested in volunteering to help me build and maintain a list for the site since going through all of the films and TV series is way too much for one person to attempt. My hope is that enough people will volunteer so that the workload isn’t too much for any one person. I can build the page itself no problem, I would just need help from people looking up the titles and enabling the audio descriptions to see if they are available for that title. If it’s something you are willing to help with, feel free to leave me a message, reply with a comment here or e-Mail feedback@blindluminations.com — thanks!

is the metadata not available on the site somewhere?
any programmer worth their salt could whip you up a crawler that runs weekly and gives you a list, if the AD is mentioned in the details of each show. It may take severral minutes to run the thing each week, depending on how paranoid the website is about automated scripts but technically this is not a job for a Human. ;

If anyone would want to do such a thing for free, I am open to that. Unfortunately, I have limited resources and wouldn’t be able to pay somebody. Also, as far as I know, there is no indication anywhere from Disney+ as to whether or not a program has audio descriptions except for when you turn them on in the subtitles section of a film or TV show. Trust me, I’ve looked and this is a big complaint I have about the service.

The list by the ACB should be very similar in Canada. Putting together a list of your own would not be worth it in my opinion.

My point is that Disney+ Star won’t be available in America, so the ACB would have no reason (or access without a VPN) to make a list. I agree with you about the normal Disney+ content, but Star is the mature content and is essentially being used as an international version of Hulu for Disney owned properties.

It won't be, though, once an entire section of their catalog is available in other countries but not the US.

This is why I want to do it. America is far better at having resources that provide this info to the blind. I honestly can’t think of a single site that would do this in Canada.

Not much of that content will have audio description initially. You should wait until it starts to be described. Right now, the content with description in the two countries will be quite similar.

Content with AD can be different between the two countries at times. As an example, Runaways had AD on Hulu but took months to get it here when the show appeared on Disney+. Also, I’m only doing the Disney+ Star section, which won’t be available in America. i’d like to have it documented early so I can keep up down the road, even if that means there aren’t many titles to document. If there is a public documentation of how little they have at first too, it might get them to move a little bit faster on providing more titles for the blind. They seem to generally be pretty receptive to making their service as accessible as possible. Even if the content is similar between the two countries, having to go and find it on an American list is a bit of a headache since you also have to figure out what service it’s on over there. I just want to have a quick and easy list that Canadians can access.

Even if it's similar at first, it eventually may not be. Hence the list Op wants to maintain. No harm in getting it set up and ready. I've been wondering about where we might go for information like this, so I'm glad somebody wants to take the initiative. I will probably help if I can.
