Perfume bottles (self.Blind)
submitted by JapaneseStudentHaru
Is it difficult for you to find the openings of perfume sprayers? I’m visually impaired in a way that’s mostly correctable with lenses, but without them, I can’t see small things like the openings to perfume sprayers. Perhaps it’s because I don’t normally do this, but I lost my glasses yesterday and, even feeling around, I couldn’t feel where the sprayer was. Does anyone have this issue who does see with their hands most of the time?

Also, I’ve heard people who are totally or mostly blind say that they can tell their perfume apart by smell. But, I wouldn’t like having to smell all of my perfumes before wearing them. I’d probably get a headache lol. Since many people can’t read Braille, I’m not sure this is the best solution. Is there a way you identify your products if you can’t read Braille?

Unless you’re very challenged I think most people can find out how to work with perfumes. And yes most perfumes has a smell to them so people can tell it apart.

I don't use perfume (I'm a guy) but I do use GTN sprays for angina which work the same way.

I just use my thumb to feel for the for the indent where the sprayer is.

You can try something like the Pen Friend below. Or you can use different sizes and shapes for the bottles.

My 3-4 perfumes are in very distinctly shaped bottles.

And I can feel where it sprays from. I find aerosol bottles are sculpted directionally so they aren’t any trouble for me

Hello!

What I will do to find the spray opening (if I can't feel it) is to press down on the top with the palm of my hand and let my fingers feel where the spray is coming from (or hear the sound).

For labeling, might I recommend the app Seeing AI... it can read short text, such as labels, without having to put a physical one on it. A second solution might be to use tactile labels or dots. They don't need to be braille, they can be in the form of a triangle or circle or arrow.

Hope that helps!

Aerosol sprays are a hazard for blind people as i guess you know. I see someone feeling with their finger tip for the flat side of the spray button where the spray hole is. I think it just takes practice and a box of tissues nearby in case things go wrong.

If you keep the perfumes in their original boxes and the boxes have barcodes then you can use Microsoft Seeing AI phone app to read the barcode and speak the product name out loud.out load

I'm glad nobody ever told me aerosols were a hazard. Crikey, what's the problem supposed to be?

I tend to put elastic bands around things I need to identify but I find perfume bottles are pretty easy because they're often crazy creative shapes.

The problem is when someone is trying to spray air freshener into a room and instead sprays it into their face or at least their hand. Or they are trying to adorn themselves with J'Adore perfume and end up anointing their partner who would prefer to be garnished with something Pour Homme.

That’s stupid! You’d have to be really dumb to do that or really incompetent. If you’re not blind get educated I suggest.

The extreme examples I give very rarely have happened, but things like that have happened to the VI person I know. What I do see most days is the frustration they have of having to find the spray direction by touch every time the use an aerosol and worrying the have still got it wrong risking damaging what precious little sight they have.

This is someones real lived experience of visual impairment. To call it dumb and stupid is inconsiderate of peoples differences.

Okay that is actually funny.

Note to self, threaten to accidentally make Phil smell like a girl if he doesn't do as you ask.
